THE RUNDOWN

WACO, Texas – No. 16 Baylor (7-4) closed out the Getterman Classic with a 4-3 win over Southern Miss Sunday morning. The win clinched the third-place finish for the Lady Bears.

Baylor got out to a 1-0 lead quickly as Nicky Dawson led things off with a single up the middle. She later scored when Kassidy Krupit’s line out to center field brought her home.

The Lady Bears added to their lead two innings later when Ana Watson blasted a double to the wall in left field to score Taylor Ellis.

Southern Miss got on the board in the top of the fourth inning and tied the game at two. An inning later, the Golden Eagles took a 3-2 lead, but the Baylor bats got things going in the bottom of the fifth.

Watson reached base on a throwing error before she scored off a Josie Bower double down the right field line. Bower scored a batter later when Hannah Smith reached base off another error by Southern Miss.

The Golden Eagles threatened to tie things up in the top of the seventh when they put runners on first and second after back-to-back walks. Sidney Holman, who earned the start, re-entered for Madison Lindsey in the final frame and helped Baylor record the final two outs to earn her first career save.

TOP QUOTE
Glenn Moore on the day…

“I think this offense is capable of being very productive. A lot of very tense hitters right now. We’ve put a little pressure on ourselves, whether it’s being at home the first weekend I don’t know. When we relax and see what this team has done in practice situations, I think we’ll be much better. But we’re a long way from that right now. But it’s early in the season and we know the youth of this team. The upperclassmen have to lead by example and bring the other ones along, and I think we’re making some great strides to do that.”

Sidney Holman on re-entering the game for Madison Lindsey…

“That to me is a little more stressful than starting the game but Maddie did a good job of keeping them off base, keeping them from scoring, and having an opportunity to come back in was nice to just be able to help her finish the game.”

Josie Bower on her performance at the plate…

“I was seeing the ball a lot better today and I knew my team needed me today when we had a runner over on second and we were down one. I knew I needed to get that run across to keep us in the game.”
