Baylor Men’s Golf Heads to ASU Thunderbird Collegiate

WACO, Texas – Baylor men’s golf wraps up its regular season by taking on a 14-team field at the ASU Thunderbird Collegiate, which runs Friday and Saturday in Phoenix, Ariz. The two-day, 54-hole tournament will be played on the par-71, 7,333-yard course at Papago Golf Club.

No. 25 Baylor faces No. 1 Oklahoma State, No. 2 Arizona State, No. 7 Texas, No. 23 North Carolina, No. 31 BYU, No. 36 Iowa State, No. 37 UCLA, No. 43 Marquette, Colorado, Saint Mary’s, Utah and a second five-player squad from Arizona State.

BU has played in the ASU Thunderbird four times previously, including twice under head coach Mike McGraw, but all four prior appearances were at the ASU Karsten Golf Course. The Bears finished 15th in 2007, sixth in 2008, fourth in 2015 and sixth last season.

Baylor’s lineup is led by senior Braden Bailey in the No. 1 spot for the fourth time in eight tournaments this season, extending his streak to 46 consecutive tournaments in the BU lineup over his entire four-year career. He’s followed by junior Colin Kober at No. 2, senior Garrett May at No. 3, junior Cooper Dossey at No. 4 and sophomore Ryan Grider at No. 5. Freshman Brandon Hoff and sophomore Mark Reppe will compete as individuals.

Dossey is in the lineup for a 13th consecutive tournament, while May is extending his streak to 18 straight tournaments in the BU lineup and Kober is appearing in the lineup for an eighth straight tournament. Grider is making his seventh lineup appearance out of eight team tournaments this season, and Reppe is competing as an individual for the third consecutive event.

All five members of the Baylor lineup are among the top-15 career stroke averages in program history. Dossey ranks second on Baylor’s all-time list with a 71.87 mark, while Bailey is fifth at 71.95, May is eighth at 72.29, Kober is 12th at 73.18 and Grider is 15th at 73.34.

Bailey is tied for fifth in program history with 18 career top-10 finishes, while May is 10th with 13 top-10 finishes and Dossey is tied for 12thwith nine top-10s. Bailey can also tie Andreas Gjesteby for seventh on Baylor’s career rounds played list with 135 if all three rounds are played at the ASU Thunderbird Collegiate.

Following their trip to Arizona, the Bears head to the Big 12 Championship at The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va., which is scheduled for April 26-28.

Baylor has finished top-three in four of seven tournaments this season, including tournament titles at the Trinity Forest Invitational and the inaugural Big 12 Match Play Championship, BU also tied for second at the All-American Intercollegiate and took third place at the Querencia Cabo Collegiate.

A Baylor player has finished top-five individually in all three spring tournaments. Reppe tied for fourth place at the All-American, Kober taking fifth place at Querencia and Bailey tied for fifth place at the Valspar. All told, BU players have combined to play 44 of 119 rounds at par or better, post seven top-10 individual finishes and record a 73.03 scoring average with a 71.41 average counting score.
