Men's Tennis Set For Big 12 Championship
WACO, Texas -- The eighth-ranked and No. 2 seed Baylor men's tennis team will open its 2019 Big 12 Championship run Saturday afternoon at the Jayhawk Tennis Center in Lawrence, Kan.
BU (20-4, 3-2 Big 12) will play its semifinal match against the winner of No. 3 seed TCU and No. 6 seed Oklahoma State at noon CT.
The Bears are joined in the championship field by top-seeded Texas, No. 3 TCU, No. 4 Oklahoma, No. 5 Texas Tech and No. 6 Oklahoma State. All-time, Baylor is 15-5 in semifinal matches, last topping top-seeded and No. 6-ranked TCU last season by a 4-2 score.

BAYLOR IN BIG 12 CHAMPIONSHIP PLAY
The Bears have produced a 38-14 record overall in Big 12 Championship play. Baylor has been at the top of the championship podium eight times. BU has won the event four out of the last 12 years and earned four straight titles from 2002-05. The Bears have made the finals 15 times, including in five of the last seven seasons. They are 8-7 in title matches.
LAST YEAR AT THE BIG 12 CHAMPIONSHIP
The 23rd-ranked and No. 5 seed Bears entered the 2018 Big 12 Championship and blew past No. 4 seed Oklahoma State, 4-0, in quarterfinal action. Then, the Bears upended top-seeded TCU, 4-2, in the semifinals to advance to the championship final for the 15th time. The Bears fell to second-seeded and host Texas, 4-1, despite a singles win from Johannes Schretter.
WHEN BEING THE NO. 2 SEED
The Bears have been the event's No. 2 seed on four other occasions: 1999, 2001, 2008 and 2015. In those years, Baylor has gone a combined 7-3, while winning the title in 2008 in College Station, Texas.
INDIVIDUAL STREAKS & TRENDS
Redshirt senior Will Little leads the team with a five-match winning streak in singles action, followed by sophomore Matias Soto with three consecutive singles matches won. The doubles tandem of senior Johannes Schretter and junior Constantin Frantzen head into the championship on a seven-match winning streak while senior Jimmy Bendeck and sophomore Sven Lah and are 8-2 in their last 10 matches.
TEAM STREAKS & TRENDS
Baylor is 19-5 in doubles points this season. BU is 17-2 when winning and 2-3 when dropping the opening point in 2019.
BU heads into the weekend with a 5-2 neutral site record with its last win over then-No. 16 USC in a 4-2 decision in Indian Wells, Calif. on March 17. Baylor is 12-4 against ranked opponents this season with its highest ranked win coming on Feb. 16 against then-No. 3 Mississippi State at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Chicago, Ill.
LOOKING AHEAD
A Baylor victory in the semifinal round of the conference championship will advance the Bears to the finals for the 16th time in the event's 23rd year. BU would then face either No. 1 Texas, No. 4 Oklahoma or No. 5 Texas Tech in the championship.
RANKED BEARS
Senior Johannes Schretter leads the Bears in the latest ITA singles rankings at No. 27, and sophomore Matias Soto checks in at No. 49. Redshirt senior Will Little is No. 76, and freshman Adrian Boitan checks in at No. 111. Senior Jimmy Bendeck and sophomore Sven Lah are the top-ranked doubles team in the country for the fifth-straight week.
LAST MATCH OUT
Baylor ended its regular season with a 4-3 loss to then-No. 23 Texas Tech in Lubbock, snapping an undefeated doubles season in conference play and pushing the Bears to 0-2 in Big 12 road action. BU got off to a slow start in both doubles, and three Bears prevailed in singles action before the Red Raiders closed out the match.
SCOUTING OKLAHOMA STATE AND TCU
The Bears are 2-0 this season to the Cowboys and Horned Frogs. BU rolled past then-No. 9 TCU by 5-2 fashion in its conference opener in Waco, and the Bears swept then-No. 34 Oklahoma State, 7-0, on Senior Day in Waco.
