No. 6 Men's Tennis Faces No. 11 UCLA in NCAA Super Regional

WACO, Texas -- With a spot in the NCAA quarterfinals and a trip to Orlando on the line, sixth-seeded Baylor men's tennis will host No. 11 UCLA in the first NCAA Super Regional Friday at 6 p.m. CT at the Hurd Tennis Center.

There will be free t-shirts, free Tiff's Treats and an inflatable for kids prior to the top-11 matchup. In case of inclement weather, the match will be at the Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center.

TOP STORYLINES
• The Bears won the Waco Regional with a 4-0 win over No. 42 Utah and 4-1 victory against No. 20 Michigan last weekend. They improved to 28-0 all-time at home in the NCAA First and Second Rounds.
• The Bears look to advance to their 13th NCAA quarterfinal match and first since 2015.
• BU is playing its 13th consecutive ranked opponent and ninth straight at home.
• BU is 4-0 against Pac-12 teams in 2019, including Friday's win over Utah in the first round.
• BU is currently on a four-match winning streak, which includes the 2019 Big 12 Tournament Championship in Lawrence, Kan. on April 20-21.
• BU is one of six Big 12 teams to make the NCAA Tournament field and one of two to host this weekend. The Bears are accompanied by No. 2 Texas, No. 9 TCU and Oklahoma in the Super Regional round.
• BU is 15-5 against the NCAA Tournament field, including wins over No. 2 seed Texas, No. 7 Mississippi State, No. 8 USC, No. 10 TCU and No. 15 Illinois.
• All five of Baylor's losses came to NCAA Tournament teams.

TEAM NOTES
• The Bears are 7-2 all-time as the No. 6 seed in the NCAA Championship. BU was last the No. 6 seed in 2009 where they advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals in College Station.
• BU is 16-5 against ranked opponents this season.
• BU won its league-leading ninth Big 12 postseason title with a 4-1 win over No. 2 Texas.
• BU is 21-7 in the doubles point this season and 20-1 when winning and 4-3 when dropping the opening point.
• With a win over Oklahoma State on April 7, Baylor captured its 18th 20-win season in 23 years and first under head coach Brian Boland.
• Baylor men's tennis placed five student-athletes on the Academic All-Big 12 First Team.
• Head coach Brian Boland is two wins away from 600 career wins.
• Four Bears were selected to the NCAA Individual Championships May 20-25 in Orlando, Fla. Johannes Schretter and Matias Soto earned at-large singles bids while Jimmy Bendeck and Sven Lah are the top-seeded doubles team.

STREAKS & TRENDS
• For the 22nd-consecutive year, the Baylor men's tennis team secured a bid to the NCAA Tournament and booked its spot in the Round of 16 for the 18th time. 
• Sven Lah leads the Bears with a five-match singles winning streak while Constantin Frantzen and Johannes Schretter are 9-2 in their last 11 doubles matches together.

WHEN HOSTING THE NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP
• Baylor hosted the NCAA First and Second Rounds for the 14th time overall and 13th time in the last 17 seasons last weekend. 
• BU is 30-1 all-time in the NCAA Championship when playing on its home courts. Its lone loss came when BU was hosting the final site to eventual national champion Virginia in the 2015 NCAA National Semifinals. 
• When BU has hosted the NCAA First and Second Rounds, it has advanced to the Round of 16 every time (14 seasons). 
• BU is 1-0 when hosting the NCAA Round of 16. Baylor took a 4-1 win over No. 18 South Florida in the 2015 NCAA Tournament.

HOME SWEET HOME
• The Bears are a perfect 15-0 at home this season and have won eight matches over ranked opponents in that stretch. • BU is 31-1 in its last 32 home matches dating back to the 2017 season. 
• BU looks to secure its ninth perfect season at home and first since 2014. 
• In all of its 2019 home wins, Baylor outscored its opponents 82-9 in 15 matches. 
• BU has swept eight teams at home this season.

SERIES HISTORY VS. UCLA
• Baylor is 9-6 all-time against UCLA, including 2-1 in the NCAA Tournament.
• In 2004, second-seeded Baylor clinched the school's first-ever NCAA national championship with a 4-0 win over third-seeded UCLA.
• The 2005 national championship was a rematch between the Bears and Bruins, and the sixth-seeded Bruins upset the top-ranked Bears and snapped a school record 57-match winning streak to take the title, 4-3.
• The Bears then faced the Bruins in the 2011 NCAA Round of 16 in Stanford, Calif. The fifth-seeded Bears took a 4-3 victory over No. 11 UCLA to advance to the quarterfinals.
• The Bears and Bruins last faced off on March 11, 2017 where UCLA took a 4-0 win over Baylor in Los Angeles.

WHAT'S NEXT
The winner of Friday's Super Regional will advance to the NCAA Championships final site for the quarterfinals next Thursday, May 16 in Orlando, Fla. If BU advances, it would face the winner of No. 3 Florida and No. 14 Tennessee.
