Baylor Women's Basketball Headed to Los Angeles for ESPYs

WACO, Texas – The 2018-19 Baylor women’s basketball team received a nomination for “Best Team” for the 2019 ESPY Awards, and the team is headed to Los Angeles Wednesday for annual sports awards ceremony put on by ESPN.

A champions-only category this season, Baylor is up against the MLB’s Boston Red Sox, NCAA Football’s Clemson Tigers, the NFL’s New England Patriots, the NBA’s Toronto Raptors, NCAA Men’s Basketball’s Virginia Cavaliers and the United States Women’s National Soccer Team.

The Lady Bears became just the third women’s program in NCAA history to win at least three titles April 7 when Baylor defeated Notre Dame 82-81 in a thriller in Tampa, Fla. Chloe Jackson hit go ahead layups in the closing seconds of both the national semifinals game vs. Oregon and the title game vs. UND to help propel the team and added a third crown to go along with 2005 and 2012 championships.

Baylor led by 12 late in the third quarter before the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year and five-time All-American Lauren Cox went down with an injury. The Lady Bears withstood a furious comeback from the Fighting Irish and twice in the last 34 seconds, Jackson gave Baylor a go-ahead bucket.

The Lady Bears finished the season at 37-1, ran the table with an 18-0 record in the Big 12 Conference and claimed both the regular season and conference tournament championship for the 10th time to give head coach Kim Mulkey and the Lady Bears 20 Big 12 championships since her arrival in 2000.

Senior Kalani Brown earned three All-America awards to couple with Cox’s three and Mulkey earned National Coach of the Year by three different entities.

The ESPYs take place Wednesday at 7 p.m. CDT on ESPN and actor/comedian Tracy Morgan will serve as host at the Microsoft Center.

The team is expected to take part in the red-carpet event and the ESPYs after party hosted by hip hop artist 2 Chains.

Mulkey, staff members and all players from the 2018-19 team with the exception of Queen Egbo and Jackson will be in attendance. Egbo is with Team USA training for the 2019 FIBA 19U Championships later this month and Jackson, a guard for the WNBA’s Chicago Sky has a schedule conflict.

Unfortunately the fawning over the soccer kids is likely to carry them to the award.

I wonder if ESPN will honor sports and sports accomplishments this year instead of the "courage" of former or non-athletes?

I'll stick with the Baylor Lady Bears for their accomplishments and their respect for the game and opponents.

So cool for the ladies to get that experience of the ESPYs. Hats off to CKM and staff/school for allowing the ladies to have the full experience if winning a NC (White House, ESPYs, etc.). It must have been incredible for them being there.

As far as the actual ESPYs show itself, I though it was the most lamely produced 3 hours of television in the history of television.

Poor Tracy Morgan should be embarrassed with the joke writing in his monologue and through rest of show. I used to think he was hilarious but the ABC joke writers just proved me wrong and probably cost him future work.

I swear if I go back and time it, there had to be 90 ACTUAL minutes of ESPYs and the other 90 mins was commercials. That was a 2 hour show stretched into 3 for commercial advertising.

I remember past ESPYs having more presentations and being more entertaining. Now it looks like ABC is just trying to cram crappy editing into a time slot with lots of advertising.

I thought it was awful. I felt sorry for the comedian. His audience wasn't even trying to help out with the fruit boxes. Just sat there like duds. Especially you Dwayne Wade. Gosh. So embarrassing. I know that I am partial but our clips were just so short compared to the professionals. Probably just me

She welcomed Sammie Wagner to the team when she committed in May so I think-hope she is in good standing with our team. I really think she is getting really to break out
this year along with several others.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that one member of the team could not make it because of a schedule conflict. It may have been Chloe, but it also could have been Aquirra. Even if that's not the reason, we should not jump to conclusions or assume the worst. I can imagine all kinds of reasons why she would not be able to make the trip or might not want to. It may not matter too much.

Queen is on the 2019 USA U19 World Cup Team Roster - maybe that's the schedule conflict that you remember.
