Lady Bears Add Post Depth In Grad Transfer Erin Degrate

For the past few weeks, SicEm365 had been hearing the rumblings of another graduate transfer coming to the Lady Bears for added depth in the post. That has now been announced as 6-6 and former La Vega Pirate Erin Degrate has returned home after graduating from Texas Tech.

Quick Analysis
Degrate will provide an outstanding post presence beside Lauren Cox in games and against her in practice. Degrate’s inside game will be further developed by Bill Brock and the staff. One area of concern is the conditioning Degrate received while at Texas Tech and her dedication to the conditioning she will receive at Baylor.

Iron sharpens iron and I expect Degrate to step up to the competition she will now face day in and day out. DeGrate averaged 8.8 points, 5.7 rebounds and 0.5 assists in 2018-2019.

Not crazy about this but we all know Kim knows what she is doing.

Why ??? Louisville was a bad choice for her out of high school. They did not have an offence that she could be productive in. She gained weight and never got the conditioning necessary for D1 ball. She said two years after transferring to TT that the coaches there were "so negative". I have no respect for Jeff Walls at all for the "street ball" tactics he employed against Griner.
At Tech - she did lose some weight but again she never got the conditioning she needed to compete at a D1 level. She did however develop a sweet little hook shot that all KB could do was watch as it went in and she made KB work hard for her points. CKM I know saw that and took notice so when Erin entered the transfer portal and contacted Baylor - CKM was very receptive.
Give her a chance - she fits in this programs offensive philosophy perfectly. She can play defense and she really wants to be here - Baylor was her only choice !!! Not her only option. Believe me Heffner will get her ready for D1 ball !!! Brock will school her on the in and outs of the post position that she did not get at Louisville or TT. She will be happier here - those young lady's chemistry and fun are contagious and that will make a big difference in her play. Finally just think we will have 6 that can play what has been called "Old School" basketball and 6 - 7 that can play what I call "quail basketball" (shoot and scatter) OMG they are going to be really hard to prepare for and play against - I almost feel sorry for our opponents - almost.
I will bet the ranch by conference time she will be a problem for every team we face this year.

Quail ball! I LOVE IT! I have had the same thought on our potential versatility! We actually could play two totally different styles of basketball, depending on personnel on the floor!

I love the does not miss putbacks comment. I like how it demoralizes an opponent when the bigs get second chance points.

I believe that DeGrate's performance will depend on her conditioning. If she losses about 20 pounds she may play the best bball of her career. if not, see what Egbo did to her last year in Lubbock; however I bow to those on this board who see her making a significant contribution - we definitely needed some help in the low post.

Is it just me? In this video does it look like she's already slimmed down?

That is the only question for me. Conditioning.

Baylor runs at a higher level than either of the programs she was at and she'll be pushed to be better than ever. I think she steps up to the challenge.

I was thinking the same thing. She looks slimmer than in the games against\ Baylor last season. I would love to see her conditioning taken up a level so that she can reach her full potential. I really see her adding some valuable minutes this season.

I agree. Alot of people are saying they dont like the move but I think it's a great move. She already lost weight before so that proves that she can do it. I think because this is her last go round and she is at home she will play as hard as she can.

What's not to like about taking Erin as a transfer? Even if she only sees limited playing time she will be an asset for the team because of her play in practice. You can't "simulate" height and her 6-6 frame will give everyone on the team a real time look at what they have to do to compete against the taller players that they will sometimes face during some of the games this year.

Ditto Baylor Dad in Va. Whether she plays are not, the girls are going to be practicing with her. She will play however. Mulkey will whip her into shape in mind, body, etc.

If she has real talent (duh), then how could it not be a good thing to have another BIG? She's 6'5"!! Enough said.

I will take Erin's last season TT numbers 8.2 Points, 5.3 Rebounds, 1.5 Blocks in 16 minutes average per game giving quality minutes resting LC, Queen and Nalyssa Smith while pounding on the opposition big's and so will Brock and CKM. Her real value may be in practice vs Cox, Smith, Egbo.

Answering Onward go According to mom Erin has shed 20 Lbs. this spring & summer already and Heffner and the nutrition staff havent gotten a hold of her yet !!!

Erin DeGrate (1) and Juicy Landrum (5)

Kim Mulkey stated
"Erin will bring us experience in the post and the size to complement Lauren, Queen, NaLyssa and Caitlin. It's always good to have a local kid come and invigorate the local fans like (DeGrate's fellow La Vega alum Juicy Landrum) has done. Getting these two reunited will be good to see on the floor."

I'm sure that knowing that you have a chance to contribute to a national championship contender has a way of motivating you much more to get in shape than playing for TTU.

Best case scenario (though I'm not betting the farm on it): Erin flourishes at Baylor, persuades high school bigs to come to Baylor and its proven record developing post players.
