The most important verbal commitment Baylor has received in recent memory

September 12, 2019

“I’m not leaving.”

That was the statement from Baylor Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Mack Rhoades to David Smoak and Paul Catalina on Tuesday during his weekly segment on You Make The Call on ESPN Central Texas after his name emerged as a serious candidate for the University of Southern California’s Athletic Director position.

Mack Rhoades first hire at Baylor was head football coach Matt Rhule in December of 2016.

The time it took Rhoades to make the statement following the rumors wasn’t as exasperating for Baylor faithful as it would have been if Matt Rhule, Scott Drew, Kim Mulkey or any other head coach in the department had made a similar announcement surrounding their futures after similar rumors, though the decision for Rhoades to lock his sights on Baylor could be as vital to Baylor as any future decisions made by his coaches .
