WACO, Texas – Baylor University has extended its contract with Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Mack B. Rhoades IV, President Linda A. Livingstone, Ph.D., announced Wednesday.

The announcement follows the contract extension late Sunday of head football coach Matt Rhule through the 2027 season.

Rhoades has led Baylor’s department of intercollegiate athletics since August 2016 under a six-year contract. His new 10-year contract will run through July 31, 2029, with two automatic, one-year extensions as mutually agreed.

“As I’ve stated on many occasions, Amy and I feel called to be at Baylor University. I am blessed to work with an incredible leader in President Livingstone and alongside the most talented and committed coaches, staff and student-athletes in the country,” Rhoades said. “There is tremendous alignment in our University leadership from the Board of Regents, the President and President’s Council, to our athletics staff and coaches in support of our institutional goal of Preparing Champions for Life. I appreciate the confidence reflected in me from the Board of Regents and Dr. Livingstone. Great things are happening at Baylor, and we have an incredibly bright future ahead.”

Rhoades’ contract includes various performance incentives in addition to base salary. As a private institution, Baylor does not disclose specific contract terms.

“We appreciate the extensive effort Mack has undergone in building our Athletics Department in alignment with Baylor’s Christian mission in such a short period of time,” Livingstone said. “We want our student-athletes to have a championship-level experience in all aspects of their lives here at Baylor. Mack and his talented team have developed extensive programs to ensure success in academics, athletics, character formation and spiritual growth. We are pleased that Mack has affirmed Baylor as a destination job, and we look forward to continued success in the future.”

A summary of Rhoades’ most recent accomplishments at Baylor is available online.

We've won a bowl game so far. One thing we know about our AD and HC - they are incredible salesmen.

Both Rhule and Rhodes came to Baylor when we were an absolute dumpster fire. Both had other options and have done well by Baylor. I welcome this news.

Mack Rhoades could've gone to USC, Matt Rhule could've gone to Oregon or the Indianapolis Colts or the New York Jets, they both chose Baylor and are being rewarded for that.

Matt, Mack, Chip and Joanne. Just a few years ago, Waco and Baylor were nothing if not Fixer Uppers.

All 4 have things headed in the right direction. It's ashamed some refuse to see that.

So many haters on here obsessed with Rhule and now Macks money..A&M wishes they had our return on the dollar.

How you end up with Reedy Roberts and Steele is by being cheap.

Players and coaches usually need pressure and a sense of urgency to perform at their best. Many times a long guaranteed contract eliminates those factors. Time will tell.

Seeing how almost all of our most successful programs are run by coaches who have been here a long time and are locked up for the foreseeable future, and none of those programs have experienced significant or sustained declines, I can only write your premise off as wishful thinking on your part.

Most successful people are self-motivated and place higher standards on themselves than any outside entity does or could. Rhule and Rhoades both strike me as those types of people.

Is this why Bennett's defense looked like it was coached by high school coaches?

Best professional we've had. He treats his people well and while I can't say I've seen enough of Mack to have a strong opinion, I can see morale improvement in Athletic Department employees. The real test will come later.

Not to distract, but Ian wasn't a people manager. He locked himself in his office for hours a day and had little contact with others. And then there was that matter of his suit and the weird **** he wore. Ian represented Ian.
Granted, I don't put it all on him, Ian was the poster boy/lap dog for certain regents. He stayed employed because he answered their phones like a late night telethon. And Regents and their inbred underachiever kids called him for every favor imaginable. A handful of people took up the bulk if Ian's time. That's how we ended up with problems. And Ian deserved the money he was paid on some level because he was the only person to take the job.

For Rhoades, here is what I want to see happen.

Rhoades should only answer the phone calls of 1-3 Regents AT BEST. None would be a better answer. Rhoades should answer to LL and he should only take direction from LL. If they want to consult, that's one thing. But let's make LL the boss. If not, then ditch the org chart.

Regents if youre reading this, and you're calling ANY coach in the football or basketball program, you need to resign. Coaches report to the AD. No more of this micromanaging bs. if it gets out we have 'regents' brokering deals for perks or trying to manage our athletic department as their personal hobby, we need to demand resignations.

I don't care how good Rhule/Rhoades are, the board has a history of screwing up. We probably need to protect these guys from the amateurs in the suites.

it's easy to feel like threads are a conversation. In reality, they really aren't. Edit one post, just my suggestion.

And I can't think of a better way to say you're insincincere than to say, "I'm trying to be nice.".

From everything I have heard, there were others pulling strings on Ian as well.

As for Rhoades, the restructuring of the board does insulate him, but he still would answer a call to fund raise, as any AD should. What he shouldn't do, is reverse his call if a big money donor or regent calls and asks for it, allegedly, like his predecessor.
