Baylor Men’s Golf Splits on Final Day at Big 12 Match Play
HOCKLEY, Texas – Baylor men’s golf split a pair of matches on the final day of the 2019 Big 12 Match Play Tournament at Golf Club at Houston Oaks. BU fell 4-1-1 against Oklahoma in the morning, but rebounded to sweep a 6-0 victory over TCU in the afternoon.
Baylor’s sweep of TCU was its first 6-0 win in the two-year-old tournament’s history, and all six matches were decided by at least two holes. Cooper Dossey rolled to a 7&5 victory over TCU’s Justin Gums, while Johnny Keefer won 5&3 over Thomas Allkins and Colin Kober recorded a 5&3 win over Mateo Fernandez de Oliviera to secure three points for the Bears.
Mark Reppe clinched the Baylor victory with a 4&3 win over TCU’s Trevor Brown, while Brandon Hoff posted a 2&1 win over Gustav Frimodt and Travis McInroe completed the sweep with a 2&1 win over Aymeric Laussot.
The Bears began the day with a 4-1-1 loss against Oklahoma. OU took the first point with Garrett Reband posting a 4&3 victory over Baylor’s Travis McInroe, but the Bears evened the match when Colin Kober recorded a 3&2 win over Blake Lorenz.
The remaining four matches came down to the wire, with OU moving back in front after Jake Holbrook won 2&1 over Johnny Keefer. Cooper Dossey and Brandon Hoff entered the final hole of their matches all-square and 1-down, respectively, but OU’s Quade Cummins won the hole to post a 1-up victory over Dossey, and Hoff’s long birdie putt was matched by a birdie from Logan McAllister to clinch the match for Oklahoma. Mark Reppe halved his match against the Sooners’ Patrick Welch.
Baylor is now 7-3 all-time at the Big 12 Match Play Championship, with wins against seven different teams. The Bears have posted a 33-18-9 record in individual matches, led by Kober at 9-1 and Dossey at 7-2-1.
Baylor wraps up its fall schedule by hosting the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate Oct. 21-22 at Royal Oaks Country Club in Dallas. The tournament will be played with all five players from each team’s lineup paired together throughout all three rounds.
