BEARS AND LONGHORNS CLASH IN TOP-FOUR MATCHUP
• Top-ranked Baylor will put its undefeated record and consecutive set streak to the test when it travels to face No. 4 Texas in Austin on Wednesday.

• The Bears are still the only undefeated team left in D1 college volleyball and hold a perfect 16-0 record.

• BU went undefeated through non-conference play for the first time since 2009 and only the third time in program history. The 2001 season was the first time the Bears went unblemished in non-conference action with an 8-0 record, and the 2009 squad went a program-best 11-0.

• Baylor looks to match its highest-ranked win of the season. BU upended No. 4 Wisconsin on the road during non-conference play for its highest-ranked road win in program history.

• Baylor is riding a 16-match winning streak, including five straight on the road in 2019.

• BU is 0-8 against Texas under head coach Ryan McGuyre.

• BU is riding a program-best 31-set winning streak. Baylor has won 10 straight matches in three sets after winning the fourth set against Houston on Sept. 12.

• Baylor is in the top-20 nationally in five different stat categories heading into Saturday’s match, and two players are among the nation’s top 15 in four categories (full list on pg. 3).

• Baylor is second behind Stephen F. Austin for the longest-set win streak in the country. Baylor holds a 31-set win streak. SFA extended its streak to 34 straight sets with a Saturday win over Southeastern Louisana.

• The Bears look to take at least a set from UT in Austin for the first time since Oct. 24, 2012.

A WIN WOULD…

• A Baylor win would extend the Bears’ school-record with 17 consecutive wins and a program-best 17-0 mark to open a season. BU broke the original record against Oklahoma on Oct. 2.

• A win would give BU an unblemished 6-0 record in road matches this season.

• A win would be Baylor’s first victory over Texas since Oct. 27, 2001 where BU took down the Longhorns in five sets in Waco.

• A win would be Baylor’s first-ever victory in Austin in 44 road meetings.

• A win would give Baylor a 6-0 record against ranked opponents in 2019.

• A win would tie the program mark for the highest-ranked road win in school history.

• A win would snap a 34-match losing streak to the Longhorns.

• A win would put BU atop the Big 12 standings with a 7-0 record.

• A win would give head coach Ryan McGuyre 100 victories at Baylor, becoming the fastest BU head coach to reach this milestone.

ROAD WARRIORS
• Baylor is 5-0 in true road matches in 2019 and recently took a 3-0 win over TCU in Ft. Worth on Oct. 12.

• Baylor was 7-4 on the road in 2018, including a season-best five-match win streak.

• BU is 32-20 all-time in road matches under head coach Ryan McGuyre.

• On the road, BU is 4-0 in three sets, 1-0 in four sets and 0-0 in five-set matches.

• Including the 2017 conference season, BU is 16-3 in Big 12 road matches under McGuyre and has only dropped matches at Texas and Kansas in that stretch.

MCGUYRE ONE WIN AWAY FROM 100 BAYLOR VICTORIES

• Head coach Ryan McGuyre surpassed 400 career wins during the 2018 season and now looks to garner his 100th win as the Baylor head coach.

• McGuyre is 99-41 in his fifth season at Baylor. He would become the fourth Baylor coach in program history to accumulate 100 wins.

• He would be the fastest Baylor coach to 100 wins and holds a .707 win mark in Waco in his fifth season.

• McGuyre sits at 434-174 overall mark in his 18th year as a collegiate women’s head coach.

• McGuyre has been a collegiate head coach at three spots: Biola, Cal Baptist and Baylor.

LAST TIME VS. TEXAS IN AUSTIN (Sept. 26, 2018)

• 21st-ranked Baylor volleyball couldn’t overcome a season-high 14 service errors in a three-set loss to fourth-ranked Texas in the team’s first meeting of 2018 at Gregory Gymnasium, 25-23, 25-16, 25-15.

• Yossiana Pressley paced all players with 11 kills while Gia Milana and Aniah Philo contributed eight each.

• The Bears committed a season-high 14 service errors and the most since BU’s 2017 season opener against Florida State (16).

• In total, BU committed 25 attack errors, two ball handling errors, 14 service errors and two receiving errors against the Longhorns (43 total errors).

• Yossiana Pressley hit negative for the first time in her career, posting 11 kills on 39 swings with 16 errors (-.128).

With No. 1 Baylor threatening its Big 12 supremacy, No. 4 Texas hosts a top-five volleyball clash
Both conference powers are on a real roll, making this already-sold out showdown a critical one in the conference race

Texas volleyball has gotten used to that top-of-the-standings lifestyle in the Big 12 over recent years.

Since Nebraska left the conference ahead of the 2011 season, Texas has won as many conference championships as it has suffered conference losses seven. In 134 Big 12 matches during that span, the Longhorns have won 80 of them in three-set sweeps. The last time Texas suffered three conference matches in a season was 2006.

So yes, Texas has been the baddest team on the Big 12 block for quite a while now. But a new bully has moved into the gym up the road. Baylor, ranked No. 1 in the country, is 16-0, the last undefeated team in the nation. No. 4-ranked Texas and the top-ranked Bears meet at Gregory Gym on Wednesday night. The match is already sold out.

"We have been waiting for this match ever since they were ranked No. 1," sophomore hitter Logan Eggleston said. "We have a lot of history with this team."

Baylor reached the No. 1 spot atop the AVCA poll for the first time in school history on Sept. 30. Since then, the Bears have swept five straight opponents. Baylor has beaten five ranked teams this year, including a four-set win in early September over Wisconsin, which is currently ranked No. 6.

"The mindset is still every match is the national championship for us," said Baylor setter Hannah Lockin, whose 11.58 assists-per-set average ranks third in the country. "We just want to play at our level that we know we can play at. (Wednesday is) the next national championship match."

Baylor's Yossiana Pressley averages 5.74 kills per set, which is second-best in the country. Texas considered her to be a raw prospect when she was at Houston Cypress Falls and didn't recruit her as part of its top-rated 2017 recruiting class that included the since-departed Lexi Sun. Longhorns coach Jerritt Elliott has previously said that Pressley is "showing that we made a mistake there."

"We only have 12 scholarships. I wish I had more to offer more kids," Elliott added this week. "She's becoming a complete player that is one of the best outside hitters in the country."

Texas (12-2), meanwhile, leads the country in hitting percentage (.328). The Longhorns ranked 65th in blocks but are coming off a 12.5-block match against West Virginia, a season high. Since its shocking loss at Rice on Sept. 18, Texas has dropped just one set in its last seven matches. The Longhorns have swept their last five Big 12 matches.

"I think it's the perfect time to be playing Baylor because we are (reaching) our peak," Eggleston said.
All-time, Texas is 83-2 against Baylor. The Bears haven't won a match in this series since 2001. The last five-set match between the teams happened in 2006.

Baylor, though, has developed into more of a formidable foe under fifth-year coach Ryan McGuyre. The Bears were ranked in two of their last four matches against Texas. Last season, Baylor joined Texas as the Big 12's only representatives in the NCAA tournament.

"To me, it's great. Our conference needs this, it's what it's about," Elliott said of Baylor's rise. "I'm hoping that Ryan stays in the Big 12 for years to come because this is good."

Texas out served us, out defended us, out blocked us, out passed us, and out shot us. I have watched Baylor play at near its best, and tonight Texas was unquestionably playing at their best, and they have a higher ceiling than we have. Better personnel throughout. Perhaps the rematch in Waco next month will prove to be a more normal, and better, matchup.

A stat was flashed at the end of the match that said we're 0-44 in Austin. Seriously, have we actually played 44 volleyball matches against UT in Austin?? Admittedly haven't followed volleyball through the years, but have there been seasons where we've played multiple matches against UT in Austin? If we're talking one a year max, that goes back into the 70's and I don't even recall us having a volleyball team in the 70's.

I doubt we had a volleyball program in the 70's. Anyone know?

Also, another thing to consider is Lady Bears could have likely ended up in the Austin venue for pre-conference tournaments and post-season tourneys so its possible for a Big12/(old SWC) team to play there twice and maybe even thrice. Also, was the 0-44 vs. "UT in Austin" or 0-44 vs. "opponent in Austiin"?

Hawaii's program started in 1974.

Oh my!. #2 Stanford swept by UCLA 3-0 tonight.
Texas might be the new #1. They wouldn't put Pitt up there would they?

We have been playing VB since 1978 and our first match ever was @Texas. I think we played a couple of times there outside of regular-season conference play. Maybe in an AIAW regional or tourney. I remember us playing them once in Austin in some kind of SWC challenge or something that wasn't part of the conference schedule. Teams used to play more matches in the early years, with more invitational tournaments. Matches used side-out scoring to 15 and sometimes were played best 2 of 3. The NCAA didn't switch to rally scoring until 2001, and then you had to score 30 to win a set until that was changed to 25 in 2008.

There was no SWC play in VB until 1982, and then only 6 schools had teams the whole time. SMU, TCU and Arkansas didn't have teams. Oklahoma State doesn't have a team.
