Baylor 78 UMES 46

Positives

  • Baylor jumped to a 19-3 lead and never allowed the margin to get closer than 15.
  • Controlled the glass 52-35 despite the absence of Tristan Clark
  • Jared Butler was really good in the first half to help Baylor build the double digit lead.  Butler finished with 20 points and 4 assists.
  • Good production off the bench from Devonte Bandoo (14 points; 2-3 three pointers) and Matthew Mayer (12 points; 2-3 three pointers).  13 rebounds between them.
  • Great defensive efficiency numbers holding UMES to 0.62 points per possession; 27% from the field and 26% from 3.
  • Freddie Gillespie struggled offensively but he was tremendous on the glass (13 rebounds) and defensively (5 blocks and 2 steals).

Concerns

  • Valuing the basketball, Vital was reckless.  Some out of control drives by Mitchell and Teague.  I do love the 9 assists to only 3 turnovers by Teague and Mitchell though.  Only 12 turnovers but taking care of the basketball and shot selection were not stellar in this one.
  • Tristan Clark’s health.  I assume this was all precautionary but it is his second game that he’s missed.  This is starting to feel like a Makai Mason situation.  Hopefully not, but Makai Mason was very effective when he played.
  • After playing with extreme focus against Villanova, you wanted to see a sharper performance heading into Arizona and Butler the next 7 days.  Hopefully the Bears look like the team that beat Villanova these next two.
