WACO, Texas – Baylor track & field is set to take on the top meet in the country this weekend as the Bears travel to Lubbock for the Texas Tech Invitational & Multis Friday and Saturday at the Sports Performance Center.

“Something we typically don’t do is three meets in a row, but we felt like the schedule just set up well for us this year,” head coach Todd Harbour said. “With this being a premier meet in the country this weekend, our athletes are excited. We had two great meets at Iowa and A&M, so we’ve built some good momentum.”

Wirth two strong meets under their belts already, the Bears have earned No. 8 and No. 22 national rankings in the men’s and women’s USTFCCCA Indoor Track & Field Rating Index, respectively. The Bears are up to 11 marks between the men’s and women’s teams in the NCAA top-16 individually, the standard to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships.

Two-time reigning Big 12 Athlete of the Week KC Lightfoot is ranked No. 1 in the men’s pole vault with a jump of 19' 0.25" (5.80m), while Tuesdi Tidwell is ranked No. 2 in the women’s pole vault at 14' 9" (4.50m).

The Bears have two 4x400-meter relay combinations in the top-16, with the team of Maxwell Willis, Ryan Croson, Matthew Moorer and Howard Fields III currently sitting at No. 2 in the NCAA with a time of 3:06.93.

Two freshmen, Kamden Jackson (200 meters) and Mackenzie Hayward (pole vault), have made their marks with early top-16 rankings, while veterans Fields III (400 meters), Riley Richards (pole vault), Jalen Seals (triple jump), Kennedy Bailey (60-meter hurdles) and Alex Madlock (triple jump) continue to hold strong in the top-16.

“We kind of backed them down this week in training to try to freshen them up for this one,” Harbour said. “We’ll go back and reload really well next week since we’re off. It will be nice to have an open week. We’re excited to travel out to Lubbock and see what we can do. Hopefully, we can build on our performances that we had the first two weeks.”

Some of the elite competition making its way to Lubbock includes host Texas Tech and Big 12 foe Iowa State along with nationally-ranked programs Arizona, Florida State, Miami (Fla.), N.C. State, Ohio State, Texas A&M and Virginia Tech.

“Three weeks in, we’re back and we’ve had some good work and good performances, so now this is your first really big measuring stick,” Harbour said. “Not for everybody, but for some. Some of our athletes are competing at a really high level. This week, we’re going to see a great facility, and we’re going to see incredible competition. We’re getting a combination of both. I don’t think there’s any doubt that this is the premier meet this weekend just because of the teams that are coming. We have teams from all over the U.S. coming to Lubbock, Texas, this weekend. It’s going to be a great meet.”

The meet gets started Friday at 3 p.m. CT with the women’s weight throw, while running events kick off at 5 p.m. CT with the prelims of the women’s 60-meter hurdles. Live results can be found at http://pttiming.com/events/87931741.
