Welcome back: Baylor athletes return to campus Monday after three month COVID quarantine
It’s been three months since the COVID-19 pandemic shut down college athletics, but the end of the sports lockdown is over in Waco — at least for now.
Baylor athletes will return to campus this week for the first time since early March. Beginning Monday, the football team will welcome its players back in waves throughout the week.
A plan organized by Baylor’s administration will be put into action Monday morning to ensure the football squad’s return is conducted in a safe manner. Veterans will report during the early portion of the week. The newcomers will arrive Thursday, the final day of Baylor’s four-day COVID screening process.
“It’s the first step,” Baylor Director of Athletics Mack Rhoades told SicEm365. “It’s the start of the race in terms of bringing student-athletes to campus and the whole preparation for the start of a fall season.”
With more than 100 players expected on the roster, an estimated 25-30 players will arrive each day over the four-day period. The individual players will arrive at staggered times and be tested throughout the day, thus limiting exposure between athletes.
As has been common practice for the entire country, any student athlete who tests positive for COVID-19 will be placed in quarantine for a predetermined amount of time before being retested to see if the player has recovered and is ready to join team activities.
“We’ll begin the four-day process of on-boarding football, take a breath and see how that goes and what we learned from that,” Rhoades said.
At this time it is unknown if Baylor will make a statement regarding any positive tests. Due to privacy laws for individual student athletes, no individual university or athletic department is forced to disclose any medical information.
If positive tests are received, Baylor has a plan in place for treating those athletes.
“We certainly talked about it as a department,” Rhoades said. “It’s not if we have any positives, it’s when—and making sure than when we do, we handle it the right way.”
The NCAA approved athletes of all sports to return to campus for voluntary workouts beginning June 1st, but the Big 12 set it’s own date of June 15th. The following guidelines were released by the Big 12 Conference on June 1.
Under first-year head coach Dave Aranda, Baylor saw its entire spring practice scheduled wiped away due to the pandemic. The NCAA is expected to allow football practice to begin in mid- or late-July, but a schedule for mandatory workouts has not been set at this time.
