BREAKING: Baylor lands impact linebacker transfer Dillon Doyle from Iowa

June 18, 2020

Baylor received a huge jolt of momentum Thursday when former Iowa linebacker Dillon Doyle announced he was joining the Bears’ football program.

Doyle is the son of former Hawkeyes strength and conditioning coach Chris Doyle, who earlier this week reached a separation agreement with the school after a group of former African-American players alleged he mistreated them during their time with the program.

Dillon Doyle entered the transfer portal on June 10, shortly after the allegations surfaced.

The 6-foot-3, 237-pound Doyle appeared in every game as a backup middle linebacker last season, when he was a redshirt freshman. He tallied 23 tackles and forced a fumble and likely woud’ve started for the Hawkeyes as a sophomore this fall.

Doyle will have three years of eligibility remaining at Baylor, where he will apply for a waiver that will allow him to play immediately instead of sitting out the 2020 campaign under NCAA transfer riules. His presence would be a massive boost for defense that returns just two starters from last year’s 11-3 Sugar Bowl squad.

An Iowa City native who attended West High School, Doyle was a finalist for the state’s Gatorade Player of the Year award in 2018. He earned Dean’s List recognition in three of the four semesters he spent at Iowa.

Any change we can bring his dad in at some capacity. He was the highest paid strength coach in the nation.

Looks like a big get at a position where we have needs. Hope he's cleared to play this season (assuming there is a season this season).

What will be the basis of his waiver requirement, and what is the likelihood of him having it granted?

Full sized, fueled up and ready to go 4-wheeling on the Horns & Sooners. Three years with Aranda should produce some awesome numbers.

Isn't Baylor supposed to have a few stud linebackers waiting in the wings? I remember Matt Jones was one cannot think of the others name

Given the nature of the allegations that led to his separation from U of I, I'd think Baylor would really hesitate to do that. The truth or falseness of allegations doesn't seem to matter much in our powderkeg national environment these days. I mean, recruiting and all.

Not showing a ton of offers on his original hs recruiting page, but I assume that's because everyone knew he was going to Iowa?

Went to HS about 45 miles North of me. Just wasn't very highly recruited. Couldn't tell you why honestly.

Not a chance. I don't think anyone will this year, but it's def. not something Baylor would do at this time. Bringing in a perceived racist (true or not) immediately after his firing when we are just now starting to get past Baylor Football allegations of looking past moral character for the sake of winning.. not going to happen.

Nice get for Coach Aranda. Was reportedly contacted with interest from Texas, Wisconsin, and Boston College as well. Have to think that our lack of depth on defense was definitely a boost for him choosing us, but still a solid commitment for this coaching staff.

Yeah, I know he is getting 15 months worth of salary & benefits from Iowa. I could definitely see him taking this year off, but hopefully in the future there is an opportunity (hopefully much of this craziness will have died down), his track record says he is one of the top strength coaches in the nation.
