Breaking Down Newest Lady Bear, Maryam Dauda

The Baylor Lady Bears are selective in their recruiting each year and the Class of 2021 only contains the top post according to ESPN. Dauda committed May 17, 2020 as a less known prospect, but vaulted to 5 Star status by the end of the summer. Here is a breakdown of her game and what she’ll bring to the Lady Bears the next 3-4 years she is on campus.

Positives

  • Tall and athletic: The 6-4 Dauda is fluid in her movements while still showing room to improve
  • Range: Dauda has the ability to stop on the break and bury a 3. Her release is clean and effortless
  • Temperment: She has the leadership to put a team on her back and win
  • Defense: Dauda isn’t afraid to mix it up or block shots on the backside as she slides on help defense
  • Work ethic: Dauda shows the ability and willingness to get better as her game continues to improve

Areas To Improve

  • Conditioning and Strength: This is for all incoming players to the Lady Bears or any elite DI program. The increase in speed of play will be there with faster and stronger players

SOLID GET !!! Absolutely solid in all phases !! .....not a one spot 3 baller like LC can hit anywhere beyond the arch !! Blocks shots, rebounds, disrupts flow on defense .....really excited to see her full potential realized when she gets stronger and better conditioned,

Looking at the current roster, including the redshirts, along with the commits we have now (+ Maddie Cox, we all hope), it looks like BU will continue be ultra-athletic and deep. This along with the coaching from the BU staff adds up to a bright future for the Lady Bears. We will be strong at all positions and able to match up well against just about any other team. I know the other D1 schools have big time talent but BU could be in the mix for more championships as well.

The article says she is the only commit for 2021, which is technically true, but really our incoming 2021 class will be Dauda, Owen, and McDaniel.

They are already on campus and transfers. Maryam is the only one to sign this week.

ESPN has Dauda rated as the 13th ranked player in her class. Based on the fact that she started playing basketball in the 6th grade, 5 stars/96. By the time she gets to Baylor she will have a 98 rating. As her strength and experience rises she will become one of the hardest match-up in the game. She will be able to play and defend all three front court positions, IMO.

I think guarding the 4/5 is a given. Going to the wing on a 3 might be a bit much, but she's fluid.

I really like her game after seeing her action videos from last season. She could easily end up our best big gal since Griner, as she quickly develops under our system..
