What a weekend for the Big 12 as Baylor finally stopped its slide, Texas remained what it has been for years, Oklahoma State and Tech played a wild one and TCU beat Kansas. Who cares? There are two big stories to dive into, so let’s do it.

Baylor 32, Kansas State 31

This was a wild ride. Baylor has spent most of the season not getting out of its own way, but they FOUND A WAY. They got the win. First the bad: the offensive line is still a massive problem and that probably won’t change. They keep shuffling around and that is not good. Dave Aranda says that is mostly due to being banged up and that’s after the offseason wreaked havoc on a unit that was not all that stable in the first place. When this crazy offseason gets going there will be a mad dash all across the country for transfers and Baylor will need to grab a couple to make this line passable.

Now the good. Charlie Brewer was finally able to show Baylor fans what they knew he could do. There were no chants for the backup, just CB fighting and fighting. His team loves him and if you want a reason why the coaching staff won’t bail, that’s the best one.

On the Kansas State end they showed flashes of being who they were earlier, but they are not that. Like I said in my column on Chris Klieman, watch out for them in the future. The man can coach.

Iowa State 23, Texas 20

Listen to the bell Tom Herman, it tolls for thee. The loss to Iowa State has thrown gasoline on the fire. This was inevitable since Herman let go of his assistant coaches last season. The excuses are gone.

Texas lead the entire game until the end and then Cameron Dicker actually missed a big kick. These things go the other way when you have things rocking, which Texas clearly does not. They aren’t bad. They aren’t good. They are average. Which sometimes is harder to accept than being bad. You can figure out why a team is bad. You can’t always figure out why they are average.

Alas, it’s more frustrating.

For Iowa State this is another step towards the ultimate goal of winning the conference title. As for now, they are looking at a rematch with Oklahoma. Should that happen—and I will say I want it to, just give me this 2020—OU will be in a very different spot than they were earlier.

Oklahoma State 50, Texas Tech 44

A barnburner for sure. For Tech, it is just another game that shows they have no direction yet. Matt Wells has a lot to figure out. The Red Raiders can look good at times, but ultimately have no idea how to win. On the bright side for the Pokes, they can win sans Chuba Hubbard. But in the end, have done nothing in 2020 to show they are ready for prime time. This was the BLAH game of the week for me.

TCU 59, Kansas 23

I will stick to my mantra of not commenting on KU football games. They are as bad as you can be. So everyone should and has beaten them this badly. Maybe this game helped TCU find some offensive rhythm, but who are we kidding? A win against Kansas shows nothing.

Final Thoughts:

  • Baylor got its groove back for at least a week. They have 2 tough ones left. Hopefully, the confidence off of a win means something.
  • Tom Herman seems to be a dead man walking. Wins over the Sunflower St on the way out won’t do anything to quell the rage of UT fans that have now been stuck in the Phantom Zone for a decade. (Fellow comic book nerds, please explain to the Cool Kids what that reference means). And what if they DON’T get Urban Meyer? What if he is really done coaching? Who can they get that will get the most out of the talent? Who will evaluate talent better? And who will they leave alone to let him do his job?
  • Iowa St. is tough. They probably should not have won that game all things considered, but when good teams become great, they do it by winning games that they don’t have their fastball in. Matt Campbell has this team on the climb.
  • I am curious to see how Oklahoma comes out of their Covid situation. They almost canceled Bedlam and won by a bunch. But now they are dealing with the wrath of the virus. Which means no practice. It has hurt almost everyone, will it hurt the Sooners?
