Men's Tennis Broom Named Big 12 Player of the Week

IRVING, Texas – After a dominant weekend at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship, Baylor men’s tennis senior Charlie Broom was named the Big 12 Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office Tuesday afternoon.

As a graduate transfer from Dartmouth, this is Broom’s first-career Big 12 weekly award. He collects Baylor’s 49th honor all-time and first of the 2021 season.

Playing at the No. 5 singles spot, No. 103-ranked Broom picked up three straight-set victories at National Indoors, including a 6-0, 6-3 win over No. 100 Josh Peck from UNC. Broom blanked his opponents twice in the first set and was the first off the court in two of BU’s three matches on the weekend. He dropped Illinois’ Hunter Heck in under 45 minutes to put a point on the board for the Bears, leading them to a second-place finish at the national event.

Broom leads the Bears with eight singles victories this season and is currently on a five-match win streak.

Alongside doubles partner Matias Soto, Broom also tallied two wins at the No. 2 position, a move up from the No. 3 court that the duo had been playing at. The Bears’ only loss on the weekend came to the No. 5-ranked pairing in the nation, North Carolina’s Kiger/Soendergaard, in Sunday’s championship match.

Baylor returns to the court on Sunday, Feb. 21 for a doubleheader against Trinity and UT Arlington at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. CT at the Hurd Tennis Center.
