Baylor opens Big 12 play with 1-2 weekend against No. 10 Texas

WACO, Texas – The Bears (13-6, 1-2 Big 12) picked up its first Big 12 win of 2021 with the victory over the Longhorns (14-6, 2-1 Big 12) on Sunday.


FRIDAY - Texas 5, Baylor 3

Baylor baseball had its 10-game win streak snapped at the hands of No. 10 Texas, 5-3, on Friday night at Baylor Ballpark. The Bears (12-5, 0-1) gave up a four-spot in the third inning to the Longhorns (13-5, 1-0), which proved to be the difference in the game.

The Bears got on the board in the first with a leadoff double from second-year freshman Jared McKenzie, followed by newcomer Jack Pineda’s first career triple to give Baylor the early 1-0 advantage. After a few BU errors, Texas capitalized and put up a four-spot in the second.

In the third, Baylor scratched across a run when McKenzie was hit by a pitch, followed up by back-to-back singles from second-year freshman Tre Richardson and fifth-year senior Andy Thomas to make it 4-2. However, Texas responded with a run of its own to push its lead back to three.

The Bears had a chance in the eighth following singles from Andy Thomas and second-year freshman Kyle Nevin set up runners on first and second with one out. After a fly out, one run scored on an error by Texas’ shortstop to make it 5-3. The Bears had the bases loaded with two outs in the inning, however a ground out to first base ended the threat.

Pineda smacked a leadoff single to start the ninth, but the Bears could not take advantage as a strikeout ended the game, 5-3.

Baylor starter Tyler Thomas (2-1) picked up his first loss of the season after throwing five innings, allowing five runs while only one was earned. The four-year junior also struck out five, while allowing three hits. Texas’ Ty Madden (3-1) impressed hurling 6.1 innings and striking out nine in the win, while Aaron Nixon (1) got the save.


SATURDAY - Texas 4, Baylor 3

The Baylor ninth-inning rally came up just short as Texas took the 4-3 victory and clinched the series on Saturday at Baylor Ballpark. The Bears (12-6, 0-2 Big 12) will look to get their first conference win in the series finale against the Longhorns (14-5, 2-0 Big 12) tomorrow afternoon.

UT came out and struck in the opening frame to go up 1-0. Baylor fired back to with an RBI-double from fifth-year senior Andy Thomas to tie the score 1-1 in the home-half of the first.

Each team was held in check until the fourth inning when UT took the lead 2-1 with a solo home run. Baylor responded in the bottom of the inning with a leadoff home run by Thomas to tie the score at 2-2.

In the sixth, Texas took back the lead after three-straight hits plated two runs to make it 4-2.

Baylor needed a rally in the bottom of the ninth and had life after fourth-year junior Davion Downey belted an opposite field home run to cut it to a one-run game. Two at-bats later, third-year sophomore Chase Wehsener doubled to center field with two outs, however a ground out ended the game as the Bears fell, 4-3.

Texas starter Tristan Stevens (2-1) earned the win after hurling six innings, while Baylor reliever Jimmy Winston (2-2) was tabbed with the loss after throwing four innings, giving up two runs and striking out six. For the second-consecutive game, UT’s Aaron Nixon (2) earned the save. BU’s starter, Blake Helton threw four innings while allowing two runs on five hits.


SUNDAY - Baylor 11, Texas 2

Baylor baseball used a quality start from fifth-year senior Hayden Kettler and a six-spot in the seventh inning to defeat No. 10 Texas, 11-2, on Sunday at Baylor Ballpark. The Bears (13-6, 1-2 Big 12) picked up its first Big 12 win of 2021 with the victory over the Longhorns (14-6, 2-1 Big 12).

Baylor started the scoring in the first, following a walk, fifth-year senior Andy Thomas continued his hot-hitting with a single, while both runners advanced on a wild pitch. In the next at-bat, second-year freshman Cade Currington came through with a two-out two-RBI single to get the Bears on the board, 2-0.

BU scratched across a run in the third with a sacrifice fly from second-year freshman Kyle Nevin to score Thomas. The scoring continued in the fourth after two runs scored due an error on Texas’ second baseman to make it 5-0 in favor of Baylor.

The Longhorns got back in the game by scoring one run in the fifth and in the sixth to trim their deficit to 5-2.

The Bears put it out of reach in the seventh with a six-spot. The first four batters of the inning reached with two walks and a single from Thomas and an RBI-single from second-year freshman Kyle Nevin. Fourth-year junior Davion Downey used a sac fly to make it 7-2. Junior Esteban Cardoza-Oquendo and third-year redshirt sophomore Chase Wehsener followed with back-to-back doubles to push the lead to 10-2. Second-year freshman Tre Richardson brought in the final run with a single to left center.

Kettler (2-0) was stellar on the mound after going seven innings, allowing one earned run on four hits and striking out six. Texas starter Kolby Kubichek (2-2) was tabbed with the loss.
