LUBBOCK, Texas – Baylor baseball used another dominant performance to take the weekend series against No. 5 Texas Tech after its 13-3 win over Sunday afternoon at Rip Griffin Park in Lubbock, Texas.

SUNDAY - Baylor 13, No. 5 Texas Tech 3

The Bears (26-13, 7-8 Big 12) became the first team to win a series against Red Raiders (27-9, 8-6 Big 12) at Rip Griffin Park since 2018. The series victory also marked the first time BU has won in Lubbock since 2018 and the first time the Bears have won a series over a top-10 opponent since 2005.

BU got on the board in the first inning with two outs as second-year freshman Tre Richardson smacked his third home run of the season, while fifth-year senior Andy Thomas followed up with a solo shot of his own to make it 2-0 in favor of the Bears.

In the fourth, it was the longball once again that extended the Baylor lead as second-year freshman Cade Currington launched his second home run of the weekend, this time a solo shot to push the advantage to 3-0.

Later in the sixth, second-year freshman Jared McKenzie pulled a ball down the right field line for a leadoff triple. In the next at-bat, Richardson brought him home with a groundout as BU led 4-0. The Red Raiders hit a leadoff homer in the bottom of the frame to trim it back to a three-run game.

The Bears opened the flood gates in the seventh with a five-spot in the inning. With one out, BU ripped off six-straight hits, starting with singles from second-year freshman Kyle Nevin and third-year sophomore Chase Wehsener, who scored Nevin. Junior Esteban Cardoza-Oquendo kept the momentum going with an RBI-single to left center to score Wehsener. Following a Jack Pineda single, McKenzie brought in another with a single.

Following a pitching change, it was Richardson who doubled in the gap to cap the scoring in the inning with a two-run double as the Bears took control, 9-1. Texas Tech scratched across a run in the home-half to make it 9-2.

Baylor scored four more runs over the final two innings with three via bases loaded walks and the other on a bases loaded hit by pitch, as BU secured the 13-3 win.

BU starter Blake Helton (3-2) went his season-long in conference play after hurling five innings of scoreless baseball, while only allowing three hits and striking out two in the win. Tech starter Mason Montgomery (2-2) was tabbed with the loss.

SATURDAY - No. 5 Texas Tech 4, Baylor 1

Baylor baseball dropped to No. 5 Texas Tech, 4-1, in front of a sold-out crowd on Saturday afternoon at Rip Griffin Park in Lubbock, Texas. The Bears (25-13, 6-8 Big 12) were tied with the Red Raiders (27-9, 8-6 Big 12) heading into the eighth before TTU used a bases-loaded double to seal the win.

Both teams were held in check as Baylor had an early opportunity to get on the board with runners on the corners with two outs in the first, however, a ground out ended the threat.

Fifth-year senior Hayden Kettler did not allow anyone on base until the fourth, but the game remained scoreless heading into the sixth inning.

Baylor scored its only run of the game in the top of the sixth when second-year freshmen Jared McKenzie and Tre Richardson used back-to-back singles to put runners on first and second with one out. A fly out advanced McKenzie to third and a wild pitch gave BU the 1-0 edge.

The Red Raiders answered right back in the home-half of the sixth, with a leadoff triple and RBI-single to make it 1-1 going into the seventh. Later in the eighth, TTU used a bases-clearing double to seize control, 4-1.

Kettler had a nice outing after throwing 5.1 innings, while only allowing one run and striking out two. Texas Tech starter Micah Dallas threw seven innings, while striking out 10. Baylor reliever Jimmy Winston (6-3) was tabbed with the loss, while Tech reliever Ryan Sublette (5-1) took the win.

FRIDAY - Baylor 12, No 5 Texas Tech 4

The Baylor baseball team picked up a big series-opening 12-4 win over No. 5 Texas Tech in front of a sold-out crowd on Friday night at Rip Griffin Park in Lubbock, Texas. The Bears (25-12, 6-7 Big 12) won its third-straight series opener against the Red Raiders (26-9, 7-6 Big 12).

Baylor exploded offensively in the second inning after fifth-year senior Andy Thomas led the frame off with a single, while second-year freshman Cade Currington crushed a two-run homer to left field to give BU the 2-0 advantage. The Bears followed up with three straight hits, including second-year freshman Kyle Nevin roping an RBI-double to right center to push it to 3-0. In the next at-bat, first baseman Chase Wehsener lofted an RBI-single to make it 4-0.

Later in the inning, second-year freshman Tre Richardson slapped a single to center to bring home newcomer Jack Pineda who walked earlier in the frame. A bases loaded walk from Currington capped the inning with Baylor leading 6-0.

Texas Tech scratched across a run in the bottom of the second, but BU quickly responded as Wehsener smacked a solo homer to left center to make it 7-1. The Red Raiders added another run in the fourth to trim it back to a five-run game.

In the seventh, fourth-year junior Davion Downey got in on the action with his fifth home run of the season, giving the Bears an 8-2 lead. After Tech answered with a run in the home-half, Baylor put the game away in the eighth. Wehsener started the scoring off with a leadoff double, while Pineda brought him home with a home run to push the score to 10-3. A few batters later, Andy Thomas used a double to keep his 13-game RBI streak alive and make it 11-3 in favor of BU.

Each team scored a run in the ninth as Baylor took the Friday night victory, 12-4.

Baylor starter Tyler Thomas (5-2) was solid on the mound for BU after throwing six innings while allowing two runs on four hits and two walks and striking out seven. Texas Tech starter Patrick Monteverde (6-2) was tabbed with his second loss of the season.
