Maybe should have voted for the bill with funding going to the border then. Which Rs wanted to do before Trump said no.
Do we need to go back over that "border bill"?
It did nothing to stop mass immigration.
[When it comes to policy, this bill would have codified a new catch-and-release policy, and normalized up to 5,000 illegal crossing encounters a day. The emergency authority contained in the bill, which was supposed to tame the millions streaming over our border, would have only operated for a limited number of days per year, and would completely disappear after three years. As my Democratic colleague Chris Murphy wrote in a post on X, under this bill 'the border never closes.'
This is just not true. The Border Emergency Authority is triggered if the border "encounters" reach a daily average of 4,000 over a period of seven days and would become mandatory once border encounters reach over 5,000 over a period of seven days or 8,500 over a single calendar day. The number of asylum seekers would then by capped at 1,400 at ports of entry...not 5,000.
Limited number of days? Had it passed the border could have been under emergency authority for 84% of 2024 lol.
Oklahoma Republican Sen. James Lankford, said he believes there will be "significant" ramifications if the GOP completely walks away from the deal he helped write. He expressed dismay that some of the lawmakers opposing the package don't actually understand how the proposed changes in immigration law would work.
"That's the part that's disappointing to me," Lankford said. "If you're going to disagree with it, disagree with it based on the facts of the bill, not something that's actually factually not true."
Not to mention the bill would have added
1,500 new border and custom personnel
4,300 asylum officers
100 additional immigration judges.
And yeah I believe America should not be turning away or deporting unaccompanied minors. "Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven"
