While Friedman was known mostly for his off-beat novelty songs, the man was capable of turning out straight ahead pure country lyrics. Exhibit 'A' was his 1973 song 'Sold American':
Quote:

Faded jaded falling cowboy star
Pawnshops itching for your old guitar
Where you're going, God only knows
The sequins have fallen from your clothes

Once you heard the Opry crowd applaud
Now you're hanging out at Fourth and Broad
On the rain wet sidewalk remembering the time
When coffee with a friend was still a dime
That song only made it to #69 on the country charts, which is really a shame. That may be why I can't really name an Exhibit 'B'.

He did have some good one liners when he was running against Rick Perry for governor in 2006, including "I'm 62 years old. That means I'm too young for Medicare and too old for women to care."

I guess the Kinkster was capable of doing the political pivot, too. He endorsed Rick Perry for U.S. President in 2012.
