I dug the Pistols back in the day.

The legend of the Sex Pistols is bigger and more influential than the band ever really was. At the root, Malcolm MacLaren was an "entrepreneur" (he owned a leather goods sex shoppe) who saw the enthusiasm for proto-rock style (unpolished musicians playing with more angst than talent), put an ad out to recruit what was basically a boy-band, and inadvertently created a myth.

Matlock could play bass, and left the band once he realized what he'd signed up with (non-serious musicians). Sid was a friendless kid from a sex-worker mother and largely unknown dad who hung around Johnny and the shop. When Glen left, Malcolm threw him in by default. Even as Johnny Rotten loudly proclaimed that there was "no such thing as a punk uniform - do what you want!", Sid eagerly became that uniform. Even though a punk bass line is largely banging open strings, Sid couldn't even fake it. Someone unseen played behind the amps when the band played live. The fame introduced Sid to the heroin which would ultimately define his life.

Malcolm was no manager, got enough of a contract to get the band (more famous for the law and civic reaction to the idea of their image than anything that ever actually happened) on a plane to the US. A couple of east coast clubs agreed to host them, but no one else really did. He got the bright idea of moving the band through "honky-tonk" style clubs on a line through the south states as a way to make it look like a tour.

The band wouldn't survive the stress, ultimately breaking up onstage at the Winterland Ball Room in San Francisco. During a painfully drug out encore of The Stooges "No Fun", Johnny cursed out the entire outfit, ultimately ending with the best one sentence summation of the whole thing

"Ever get the feeling you've been cheated?"

At the time I had absolutely no idea that I was "that close to history."
It all seemed like a messed up show from a one-off band that we would never hear from again, promoted by an over-zealous manager.

I was shocked that they decided to try it again 50 years later, but dang if they didn't gin up a ton of publicity for it and a sold-out gig for their return to the Longhorn.

The entire thing only convinced me even more that the best music and musicians were coming out of Texas.

The only decent bands to come out of the East Coast are Bruce Springsteen and the Young Rascals, with maybe the Ramones thrown in there.

He was a troubled soul who wasn't prepared for the spotlight and fame he was thrust into.
I sorta felt sorry for him. (At least he had good taste in beer.)

Sid had his own solo album, of sorts, after the Pistols folded. "Sid Sings" is a poorly engineered collection of mostly live recordings. There's a lot of covers.

His studio version of Sinatra's "My Way" is a notable hit within punk lore.

We're still not sure what happened in the hotel that night.

Johnny Rotten was (or is?) still producing music not too long ago. His band PIL (public image ltd) was great in my opinion, really enjoy it.

John enjoys, and always has, being oppositional. If you're for it, he's against it. Anything anyone likes is stupid and consumerist. He won't be a part of it.

PiL was a really fun dance band in its time.

I think his last meaningful interaction with the Sex Pistols was 1996 and the "Filthy Lucre Live" tour and album. His wife succumbed to Alzheimer's a few years ago. He was her dedicated caregiver before that.
