Here is a GREAT appreciation of his work from the New York Times.

"Ennio Morricone was more than one of the world's great soundtrack composers he was one of the world's great composers, period. For me, his work stands with Bach, Mozart, Debussy, Ellington and Stravinsky in achieving that rare fusion of heart and mind. Dare we compare the five notes of his famous "coyote call" in "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" with the four opening notes of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony?
Morricone's music is just as timeless."

Loved his work.
Glad he finally won for "The Hateful 8."
But my favorite is "The Mission."

For my money, his soundtrack for The Good, The Bad and The Ugly is the gold standard. From the theme song to "Ecstasy of Gold" he gave that film a certain "feel."
And here's the amazing part: A guy from Italy, wrote the best soundtracks for western films. How an Italian got so in tune to the American west is pretty bloody amazing, IMHO.
I liked all of his stuff, and am a big fan.
And his theme song for A Few Dollars More is extremely underrated. Not mentioned as much as GB&U, or Once Upon A Time In The West, but it stands up very well today.

The Good the Bad and the Ugly theme song done by Great Britain's Ukulele Orchestra is great!
