Baylor does Homecoming bigger & better than anyone; stands to reason since Baylor invented Homecoming in 1909. This week Baylor welcomes the Kansas Jayhawks to beautiful McLane Stadium as their homecoming patsy.

According to Vice, while no one is positive which college officially started the tradition, the University of Missouri, Baylor University, and the University of Illinois all claim to have began hosting homecoming events in 1911, 1909, and 1910, respectively.Aug 24, 2022

They have a false claim; Missouri's first homecoming was 1911 - 2 years after Baylor.

I think to be clear, Baylor likely used the word "homecoming" for their 1909 event. They then had the earliest "homecoming." However, they did not repeat the event as an annual gathering until a few years later. Missouri held their first annual homecoming two years later in 1911. So one created the event and used the word. The other made it an annual gathering of alumni first. The Smithsonian apparently has verified the facts of both sides of this.
