I'm headed to the Texas OU game this weekend. Even though I hate both schools, I'm going with a good friend who is a Horns fan, and I'm looking forward to going for the first time in my life to the Texas State Fair, the Cotton Bowl, and this game. Trying to do 1-2 "Bucket List" college games / stadiums per year each season going forward now to supplement what's likely to be a disappointing Baylor football experience. Going to Army-Navy in DC in December as well.

Curious what big games / interesting stadiums you've been to? I've attended college games at these CFB venues, but it's not a huge list. Want to add SEC venues for sure:

Baylor (obviously) - Floyd Casey and McLane
Texas
A&M
Jerry World (Baylor)
Texas Stadium (SMU)
Texas State
TCU
UTSA (Alamo Dome)
Trinity
The Big House (Michigan)
Oregon State
Washington
Washington State (vs Baylor in Seattle)
Notre Dame
CU
Cal
Cotton Bowl (this weekend)
Army-Navy (Dec. in DC)

I want to start going to the SEC venues. I have been to Willy B in Columbia to see the gamecocks play aggy and may be going to that one again this year. Also, i've been to the Clemson death valley. I wanna go to Athens for a game and the swamp.

I've only been to one RRS game and it was awesome. I would definitely go see that game again. I try to go to the fair when I can but going to the game makes it that much more fun.

Time again to experience my annual disappointment that when UT and OU play there is no way for both of them to lose.

Red River Rivalry is a blast. It's a great atmosphere, a lot of fun, even more fun if you're a kid. It's one of the two games in the year I'll pull for Texas to win.

Believe it or not my first trip to that game was 1949. Our parents planted us in the upper deck and they went to their seats somewhere else. I'll never forget the aggy sitting behind us with his aggy pennant cheering for OU. At the time I thought that odd. I've only been about 6 times since, the latest probably around 1989.

I've been to thousands of games from coast to coast and nothing quite compares to this game. It is awesome.

Go way earlier than you think you need to and hang out at the fair. The traffic in Dallas to the Cotton Bowl is a freakin' nightmare. Even near the grounds, where the local crack houses are trying to make you park in their yard. It's one reason why I stopped covering that game, and the sidelines were a total clustrfudge.

Otherwise, once the game is on, it's a great atmosphere.

This is really good advice. There used to be a place called the Old Mill Inn that was on the fair grounds but opened earlier than the fair. It was a good place to grab a drink or whatever once you arrived really early (and before most other people who were shooting for the 10 am open). Not sure if it is still open.

Also, the vibe at the fair gets a lot wilder once the sun goes down esp UT OU game day. Some people like that, but if you don't, leave by 6 or so.

yeah, we are staying at a Marriott in Addison, and are going to take the DART train to the fairgrounds. We will leave plenty early.

Between the Hedges is a must. Athens is one of the greatest college towns in the world.

Neyland along the banks of the Tennessee river is a must. If you can get an invite to the Vol navy even better. If possible would recommend a Florida or Bama game. It'll be the loudest stadium you've been in.

FirstBank Stadium…

Death Valley in Baton Rouge. Unfortunately was unable to join a few friends for a game the other year but they won't shut up about it.

Ole Miss: the stadium is whatever but The Grove before the game is the greatest party every Saturday.

Folsom Field: watched RGIII run over the Buffs. One of the greatest views in sports. The running of Ralphie is actually super cool.

UNC: had a fun time with a friend but definitely better for the basketball bucket list.

Under the radar pick: Appalachian State. Beautiful venue in the mountains and very loyal fans. Clemson, Blacksburg, and Knoxville are relatively easy drives so if schedule lines up you can hit Boone and another Stadium in one weekend.

Wow! Have fun. Married to a Horn and we have been. It's an absolute blast. Enjoy!

I've been to Ole Miss and it's true, their campus on game day is wonderful.

Neyland in Knoxville. Kentucky at Tennessee was incredible. I lived in Tennessee several years and saw a handful of SEC games there. You almost get vertigo in that steep bowl. Plus they have the boat-in like we do on the river.

Been to many Georgia games because that's where I grew up and many of my family went. Great environment.

Saw Georgia at Florida. That was loud. Full on "hate" rivalry. Magic.

Oh, if you get up north see a Badgers home game. Rocking!

Those are great venues but they do not compare when the fan base is 50/50. The only thing close to UT/OU is UGA./FLA.

I haven't been to Army/Navy so I cannot compare. I'll speculate most of the UT crowd are grads of UT and most of the OU crowd is t-shirt fans.

Quote:

Since 1929, the Sooners and Longhorns have played annually at Fair Park in Dallas. The game has been played inside the Cotton Bowl every year since 1937. Oklahoma has won five of its last six meetings against Texas, 11 of the last 15 and 17 of the last 25

This adds to the rivalry lol

Tennessee did play Virginia Tech at Bristol Motor Speedway. My friend's dad went and said you needed binoculars, but was a unique two team experience. Definitely a spectacle and not a tradition though.

Army/Navy is on my bucket list.

Earlier in my career I got a chance to be the press box announcer at Rice Stadium in 1973 and had the privilege of announcing a high school playoff game between Baytown Sterling Rangers and the Angleton Wildcats at the World FamousAstrodome. Still an honor to this day.

To this day Rice Stadium is the absolute most perfect stadium design and my all time favorite. Its been a long time since it held 72k but it remains a beauty designed by Brown & Root and donated to Rice University in 1950.

Saw the Baylor Rice game there in the early 50's. Good crowd.

to be fair, I don't know all the logistical details of getting there, but my friend who I'm going to the game with the Longhorn season ticket holder does this every year so he's got it down pat. I'm just giving broad generalities on how we're getting there.

I'm depressed at the number of "I'll root for Texas only during...". Never. Not this guy. Never for a school that willfully tried to damage mine. I will not play the "gosh, I guess we have to root for a Texas team in the SEC since it's one of two super conferences".

I hope the place rots in sports hell. I hope they Nascar southeast football and after awhile nobody cares.

I've been to both Ole Miss and Notre Dame

Ole Miss was nice since it was an October game and cool outside (people forget how nice October can be outside of Texas). Stadium was underwhelming but nice sight lines. Girls were pretty (it's an easy school to get into)

Notre Dame was also great. Big stadium and good crowd. But you never meet anyone who actually went to school there. It's all t-shirt fans from the Chicagoland metro area and people who have flown in for the game to experience Notre Dame.

I actually enjoyed the games at Ownby Stadium that SMU played in for a while after death penalty. It was like a college game in a high school atmosphere. Very unique, kinda sad and kinda awesome at the same time.
