Don't looks like sweaty fat guy will be a Trojan next year. Likely a smart career move for him with the current trajectory of things.

If USC has a good year, look for him to be a hot HC candidate come mid season.

That's a good hire. He is going have a lot of resources.

Good hire. I'm surprised they didn't hire the recently fired UT DC.

I heard him speak in person when he was consulting at Baylor - he seemed really burnt out on the NIL/roster management side, but clearly still had a passion for coaching as a mentor and as an Xs&Os guy.

Feels like it will be a spectacular success or flame out spectacularly with little in between.

GO with those resources. It will be interesting. Always a hell of a coach on defense to me

He is trying to take Paul Gonzales with him.

that would be a major blow tbh - Coach G is really good. If we can't retain him, hopefully Klanderman knows a guy.

Its just been reported that Gonzales is going to USC to be with Patterson. He was one of the few bright spots on the defense last year, so this is a real tough move, especially since replacing him with anyone with experience will be difficult at this point in the hiring cycle.

That said, I can't blame him for this move. He leaves a job where the coach is all but sure to be fired next year to go work at a better program in his home state with his mentor.

And why do you think the coach is all but sure to be fired next year? I'm not advocating that he stay or go, but it is easy to see the handwriting on the wall. If I had to bet, my money would go to DA being coach in 27.

And the advantage or wisdom in sticking around BU is .....?

If I were tying my future to a FB coach, I'd look to a Patterson rather than Aranda or to a Baylor where, in spite of a lot of "good", absolutely nothing is certain except uncertainty.

Riley's future at USC is no more certain than Aranda's here.

. . . as usual, drahtaar speaks words of wisdom. I know no one on this board who is more of a Baylor guy, but he recognizes truth when he sees it.

The point of my post is completing flying over you guys' heads. What indication at all do you have that he will be fired? I am just stating that I don't think he will based on past action of the administration. I don't give a flip one way or another, so take your cute remarks someplace else. I think if the intent was not to keep him, he would have already been fired.

Is it possible at all for you to make a remark without personal insults? This is all about the content, not the poster.

Bumpas was the defense. When he retired, TCU went downhill. It took a few years for players to graduate/leave etc but when those guys were done, TCU started feeling his absence.

What I'm saying is Fat Pat is overrated.

I don't think that's true at all. Patterson was a great defensive mind going back to when he was just the defensive coordinator at TCU in the late 1990s. He also had a great eye for finding diamond in the rough type players and turning them into something decent. Tank Carder comes to mind - two star recruit that he turned into a 2X defensive player of the year in the Mountain West. Yes, his last two or three years were pretty lackluster, but the fact that TCU was able to make it to the national championship shortly after he left tells you that he left them with some talent.

We fans can sit here and debate whether Gary Patterson is still good, but the dude was able to land a Blue Blood coordinator gig at 65 years old after partial retirement. He is clearly very highly thought of in the league

neither of y'all is completely wrong here: Patterson had plenty of success before Bumpas, and didn't immediately implode after he left...but he also hit his career heights while Bumpas was there and never quiet replicated them without Bumpas.

I think it's simply if Aranda makes a bowl game, he stays. If he doesn't, he goes.

you may well be right, but I think fan engagement is a big component too, so I think just making a bowl game isn't enough, i.e. going 6-6 to end up either 7-6 or 6-7 won't have anyone revved up.

I know some folks here think the football program is being intentionally tanked. I do not. Thus I do not believe a mere bowl appearance, given the overall trajectory of our program, will be enough to save Dave.
