curious if anyone has any thoughts about Mateos vs Pugh as our OL coach.

Since Mateos was picked second, does that imply he isn't as good?

Who is the better recruiter? Who is the better player developer?

I thought Mateo was the original number one pick that didn't work out originally.

Don't know the answer to your question but I do know that all the media covering BYU on Twitter sure seem to be taking Mateos departure as a huge gut punch. They certainly seem to think very highly of him.

In today's social media climate, now that we know what Pugh did, Grimes and Randa can't afford any perceived issues. Pugh was such a successful player and coach, and being more experienced, he was Grimes first choice. That does not take away from Mateo's ability or potential. He will be a very good addition, and I'm sure, will represent us well on and off the field.

I am sure glad that there were no cell phones or social media when I was a stupid college student. It is terrible when a moment in your youth caused you a lifetime of grief.

That is my original understanding. We initially heard it was going to be Mateo.... so I think he actually was our first choice.

I'm not sure how we were able to get him on the second shot? The part seems a little confusing

This quote now sounds a little funny in retrospect

I think that is a good thing he's gone. Need a complete reset on the OL.

Y'all, it is amazing that Rhoades and Randa had the wisdom and foresight to totally flush the entire O so soon. That indicates how totally disfunctional it was from top to bottom. Next year, on any given play, it's 6 points. The Big 12 doesn't know what's about to hit them.

6 points on any given play is Briles level and I don't know if we are there yet. Need to see how the O looks first.

all of this is second hand info so it may not be 100% correct but, here it is: Mateos was choice number one. However, his then fiance and now wife of 1 day is 1 year away from her masters degree. His initial response was that he wanted to stay where he was until she eared her degree. Baylor never got to the point of discussing money with him. When Baylor decided Pugh wasn't coming, Mateos was approached with enough money that a newly wedded couple could be happy.

Makes total sense, Lib. The future Mrs. Mateos may have swayed the initial decision.

How much money are we paying him?

Enough for him and his bride to leave a sweet gig at BYU, apparently.

Comgrats to them. Maybe they can do the long distance thing for a year. Happens in professional schools all the time. The wife and I did while she was in grad school. Several of my married Med school classmates got sent to residencies in different cities, a few in different states.

I prefer getting 2 guys that have been working together.

Feel bad for Pugh. Remember kids, the internet is forever.

chorne68, you are spot on. no cell phone cameras probably saved me in many ways. I find it so frustrating to see so many posts condemning Pugh . Ok so somebody in the BU food chain decided against his hire. That doesn't give folks the right to tar and feather the guy with your righteous goodie two-shoe posts. Geez, man, let it go. Get over it. And if you do get over it, you might look in the mirror and see what you would be hired for if all your own f-up's were exposed

it is just this kind of hypocrisy that causes many no-BU types to view BU goodie two-shoe culture with skepticism
