is officially gone, nothing but a pile of rubble now. It will be interesting to see what eventually gets built there, it's a pretty big area.

Seems like a large lot for a McDonalds. But I read that yesterday on a local news site. Did Marstaller close or move out to 340 somewhere.

Marstaller closed several years ago; in the last couple years a Spanish language used car dealership was operating out of that building.

Prior to Marstaller's closing in 2020, I imagine it got tougher for Marstaller to do business here in Waco for a couple of reasons.

First, Ford decided in 2011 to close its Mercury division. Marstaller sold a lot of Mercurys over the years to folks who wanted a 'nicer' Ford.

Then, left with only the Lincoln franchise from Ford, they got pressured by Ford to spend significant dollars to upgrade the dealership as Ford was trying to promote Lincoln as being comparable to the other luxury brands. But, I think it would have been hard to turn that Valley Mills Drive location into something that was on par with a Sewell or a Park Place.

As a result, I think Lincoln pulled their dealership in 2020.

I would imagine Ford offered it to Bird-Kultgen, but I guess they passed on it. So, if you want a Lincoln today, the closest dealer is in Temple.

I can't think of Marstaller Motors without thinking of Butch Henry's radio promos of the dealership. Will forever be etched in my memory. RIP Butch and now the old building too.

Mac Hughes married Pam Marstaller...Yep, quite colorful at B.U, baseball games..and he knew Butch well...

Ah yes. I believe that was German-made and imported back in the 1980's.

When I think of Mercury, however, I think of the last great American-made sedan, which Ford killed in 2011:

The latter models of the Mercury Grand Marquis were reliable enough that they would routinely run 300,000 - 400,000 miles without needing a major repair, a feat that Ford can only dream of today (don't get me started).

You still see a ton of them on the road, some with Marstaller Motors emblems.

Mac played golf, well. True story: he once hit two hole in ones (#3 and then #5) during the final round of a Ridgewood club championship…..with the same ball. He built an insurmountable lead on the front and as the story goes he teed it up #9 when someone in his group asked him if that was the same ball he hit on #5 and he said it was the ball he started the round with. #9 has OB down the right side and one of the few holes you could lose your ball for good on, and they were able to get him to put the ball in his bag for a keepsake. Smh.

I believe Marstaller had a Jeep franchise as well that was damaging when it was taken away the same as Sam Nay's Dodge franchise.

I grew up next to Mac in Marlin. He's a few years older than my brother who is 10 years older than me. I always enjoyed visiting with him when he came down to visit his parents. My dad would keep me abreast all of Mac's golfing stories. And he kept me updated on his son who is a very good golfer as well.

His parent's house burned down early 70's. One day they had one of the local yard guys cleaning up some of the mess. I went over and began helping. I think I worked for 6 or 7 hours. I wasn't expecting anything in return, but a few days later Dr. Hughes gave me a $20 bill for helping. That was a lot a money for a youngster.

His parents Dr. Hughes and Mrs Hughes were lovely people. My dad became really close to Dr. Hughes in his later years. He missed him greatly when he passed away.
