The relationship with the coaches was absolutely an issue too. He clearly thought he should have been more featured and was irked by the transfer/one and done process Drew runs.

Ultimately he'll get the last laugh although hopefully he'll not get the final four.

He had Ferttita Fever whose only cure is more NIL cowbell.

With the way he and his family have referenced us since he left, I do not care. Since his BU experience was so bad, maybe he should return his ring... something he hasn't matched in Houston (yet).

You can't blame him. Doubtful that he will make it big in the NBA. Has to get his money while he can. Just the way it works. It's not like he sulked, he gave us his best while he was here, it seemed to me.

Sampson wooed him on the idea of playing PG. To my understanding, Drew shot him straight on his role here, and that he'd remain an undersized SG. Sampson told him he'd have a shot at playing PG, and then proceeded to give him token minutes behind Shead in non-conference play his first year there, then recruited from the transfer portal over him for two years.

Whatever, it worked out well for him regardless, but I have no issue with the way it went down.

Baylor wouldn't let him play some PG and we thought we didn't need him. Plus Cryer saw UH having a better team and could continue developing him, especially on defense. He always wasn't a culture of JOY!

The injury "handling" issue was a thing too. They felt it was mishandled.

This is when Bu was late on NIL. More funds were used for new high level guys (which created some resentment) than retaining guys.

The pg thing is an excuse and was obviously not going to happen as we knew Sampson would immediately pivot.

End of the day we've desperately missed him the last two years and I hope Drew sees it was a mistake to let that relationship go bad.

Not sure exactly why he left but he's never wasted an opportunity to indirectly take a shot at Drew's coaching (without ever mentioning Drew's name) anytime he's asked a question because he usually starts with "well this coaching staff is more motivational, is better at teaching, holds me to more accountability............insert any other phrase.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Sounds like he wanted a more old school in your face type coach. Some people respond better to that. Sampson is more that. Drew obviously coaches and no one doubts that, he has a natty. His methods I guess didn't mesh with what Cryer wanted so there was a parting of ways. With the portal expect it more. But judging by the comments of our current roster after today's loss plenty of guys like JOY and want to play in it.

A lot of you probably remember the poster DanaDane. He used to give me inside scope from a buddy of his inside the program. The Cryer/BU split was not pretty. Drew and the staff along with most of the team weren't sad to see him go. No idea why anyone on here would root for LJ. He craps on BU at every opportunity
boykin_spaniel
How long do you want to ignore this user?
It's not a good look when you crap on your former team/school and they take the high road. He can chirp all he wants. He seems to be the only dude who has been in the program to say negative things. Looks petty and childish. Interesting info though, always just thought it was a role disagreement.

It's been very well known and public that Cryer was not happy with the role he was offered, the same role he's playing now, and how (incoming freshmen) others would be getting more NIL than him. He wanted to be the featured player.

LJ Cryer is my least favorite type of modern college basketball player. He's a near-elite college player, but he thinks he's more than that.

He will most likely never play a second in the NBA. And if he does, it will be as a late second-round pick or undrafted free agent, and he'll get his cup of coffee and be done.

Instead of recognizing what he is, a really good, undersized shooting guard, he moped around Waco crying because Drew wouldn't let him be something he's not (a point guard) and then transferred, airing his dirty laundry on the way out.

Give me the self-aware college star over the "give me opportunities to showcase my nonexistent NBA skills or I'm transferring" guy all day every day.

The latter philosophy gets you Jeremy Roach on a team that needed -- and would have benefited much more from -- a RayJ Dennis or an Adam Flagler.

THIS.

I don't have a problem w/ the LJ situation. Leaving worked out great for him, and while it hasn't been great for our trajectory I don't think he was a good culture fit in this program anyways. The results have been disappointing post-natty, but I love the character of the guys CSD has continued to bring in here.

It's one thing to not like your role and be public about that, but was he public about the way Drew is running the program with "transfer/one and done processes"? There is a difference between not liking your role and fundamentally disagreeing with how a program is being run. It sounds like you don't like the transfer/one and done methodology and you injected it into this conversation. It's ok to disagree with Drew on that, but no need to project your opinions on to LJ.

Yep, after hearing those comments, it's hard to be too disappointed …. Especially when bowing out to a number one seed like Duke.

I thought he didn't like his role here. He wanted to develop into a PG to play in the league. We played him as an SG.

I'm not. LJ was being quite literally recruited over in both his starting position (the 2) and where he thought he belonged as he said on his way out the door(a hybird 1/2). He was publicly not happy with his position and the view of him in the program.

We had Keyonte coming in and it was well known we'd be back in the market for a starting point guard.

Cryer was not a happy camper so he went somewhere telling him sweet nothings and promising him more money and a shot at the position Drew wouldn't give him. That has everything to do with who Drew was recruiting, you recruit areas of need, at that point in time it was a well known we're throwing money at five stars like Key and Walter was in the wings and we still needed a point guard. LJ wasn't going to get the money he wanted and the roles he wanted. That's because Drew was spending money on portal guards and 5 stars instead of Cryer.

Take an example in the alternate, you won't see Drew recruiting a top pure point guard since we have Rob Wright who has 1) already been given the keys to the offense; 2) has the talent to deserve it, and; 3) it sounds like we'll open up the bank to make sure he sticks around. Recruiting priorities talk about needs and are a great view into how players are viewed.

Lots of great comments here. Thank you for the insight. NIL and the Transfer Portal are going to destroy college sports. Sounds like Cryer's time at Baylor was somewhat contentious.

Pay to play seems to be here for good. I think this absolutely sucks for college sports.

I feel that the real problem is that players can bounce at any time.

I think it will be better for the sport if players are required to commit to a program in exchange for getting paid.

how much do you want to bet he will make a team? He'll be drafted. Not 1st rd. Probably late 2nd or 3rd.
