Dude must really want to be a 4-year player

He will likely thrive under Patino, although the expectation to play defense will ratchet up. I don't know the make up of their team for next year but I read that with Tounde they are a legit final four contender. It would have been nice to have him back as another offensive threat but he also had poor shot selection at times. I'm sure Rick either rein that in.

As I (and others) said months ago, Tounde was never coming back here. It was either the NBA or one of the 4 or 5 schools who could pay twice what we could afford to pay. I thought it would be UK or UCLA, but St. John's must have given him all he wanted.

None of this is about loving schools or any of that other BS some fans are still trying to hold on to from pre-NIL days. It is strictly transactional business so no reason to tie much emotion to it. All players are just 1 year rentals and I'll pull for them while they are here. I'm sure I will catch a game or two of St. John's next year and I'll watch because I'm familiar with Tounde. But there's no emotional tie to Tounde, one way of the other. He's just another in a long line of 1-year transactional players we'll see over the years until and unless there's a change to the collegiate sports model

Great move for Tounde. His skill set is miles away from being an NBA wing and he may never get there. We were never gonna have enough money to pay him what other programs were capable of. Nor would I want him at that price. Someone with his limited skill set has to get all the money they can because their career won't last long at the next level. I am not at all a fan of his game, but if he puts in the work stranger things have happened.

Good move on Tounde's part. He wants to be on a winning team

I'm not sure I'd call St John's a winning team. They've only recently had any success. And $$ is the main reason why. He didn't go to SJ because they're a winning team. He went there because they're paying him the most. Smart move considering he's doing nothing of relevance ever in the NBA

With the roster St. Johns is putting together, curious how all of the players will get the PT they are probably looking for.

It's why I don't feel bad about being more critical of bad play on the field than I was in the pre pay for play days. If a contractor does work on a project and they do a terrible job, they can expect criticism. Modern college sports aren't much different

So, they've recently been a winning team then? I doubt the dude is worried about picking St John's because of the Steve Lavin years.

More money (as you mentioned the main reason)
30 wins last year
HoF coach (already has that though)
15ish games a year at MSG
Easier to get to Benin if traveling home
Live in NYC which has a large African population compared to almost 0 in Waco

Seems like an easy decision to me.

Karl, it didn't happen.

Doubt the guy cares about a large African population in NY. Also doubt he gives a **** if SJ had a good year. First in forever. Tounde cares about $). And that's fine. But let's call a spade for what it is. He's also smart to get paid now. Because his NbA career will be short to non existent. His skill set is a dime & dozen. He's nothing special by NBA standards. And I don't say that as a diss. It's reality.

It looks like a bad decision for Tounde in my view. Latest estimates had him end of first round or very early second round, which would pretty much guarantee him at least 50% of his time next year with the NBA team. This seems to be an example of a program with huge NIL buying a player out of the late first round. Will this make him into a top ten pick in 27? Pitino is a good coach, no doubt, but I do doubt Tounde gets the skill development he needs to get a better draft position than he gets now.

The money is probably the main factor (should be too), but people can prioritize multiple things. If the money is close and you like a fit or a location. Happens all the time in the pros.

I wonder if St John's is even #1 money wise when you add in taxes on those earnings in NYC?

I'm not as negative on his earning potential. Sure, this is probably the most he'll likely earn in his basketball career if the NBA doesn't work, but he'll probably make decent coin playing overseas if the NBA doesn't work out. Can't rely on that future though, have to take the money now.

All valid points.
I don't intend to be negative on his playing xareer. He's gonna play ball for a good while. I just don't think he's going to stick in the NBA. Maybe he makes me eat crow

Wow! I had no idea that he was paid that much; this whole thing is ridiculous.

Yessoufou will reportedly make "upwards of $7 million" playing for St. John's next season, according to reporter Aaron Heisen. It's a shocking figure, but that's what talent goes for in today's era of college hoops.

7 million for a guy whose going to struggle being a top 3 guy on his own team. It shows how far out of touch college athletics have gotten

Here's the article. It goes into great detail about the current structure of revenue-sharing and NIL gives a big $$ advantage to programs like St. Johns which have no football program.

From what I recall, Baylor is the only non-public University to win a National Championship in mbb while also playing Power 5 College football. Will there ever be another one?
None of what is going on with NIL is sustainable. I suspect that, come the next recession, big donors footing the bill for the NIL deals will back away faster than the Saudi Prince walked away from LIV.

Wouldn't Duke have to be in that group?

Ouch. You got me. I forget that Duke is a private school, and that they play P5 football. Duke and Notre Dame are the great exceptions as they have vast national/international fanbases. They don't face a lot of the limitations that other private schools face. Baylor exists with a relatively small fan and donor base. The people that have the money to secure the shooting guard are likely the same people that may secure the quarterback, school endowment, building and academic projects etc. Whatever we do, our leadership has to be reminded that we compete in a seemingly unlimited spending war for players, and our capacity to meet that challenge is finite.

Yep, and the demands for W's will only become more harsh, rightly so in this new world.

I'm happy for TY. He worked hard here and from what I've seen was a great teammate.

With this kind of money would it be better for him to be a 4 year college player? I don't know what kind of money would be expected from the NBA with late first round/second round picks.
