Second game against fever, NS is dominate again. Scores sixteen in 33 min, outscoring A'ja who played 38 min. Defenses can NO longer key on A'ja to shut down the Aces because Smith is so athletic. Her shot is as smooth as silk. Man this girl is on fire! She just needed a positive, talented environment in which to excel. She is making the fever pay a big price for undervaluing her talent. They didn't know how to use her, and now, they don't know how to stop her from destroying their team.
I don't think it was that.
She has always been a very good player, but I think part of her struggles in Indy were somewhat tied to getting into her own head.
It always seemed like she felt she needed to be the #1 option there, despite everyone else knowing this wasn't going to be the case - not with Kelsey Mitchell already there.
And that definitely wasn't going to be the case once Caitlyn Clark arrived on the scene.
Then throw Aliyah Boston into the mix, and she was looking at being possibly the 3rd or 4th option on the team, which more than likely didn't sit well with her.
Outside of her freshman year at Baylor (when she had to defer to Kalani, Lauren, and Chloe during their championship run), she has probably always taken the approach that she needed to be the leader of the team she's played on.
So sometimes it's hard to get out of that mindset when it's no longer the reality.
In Vegas, however, she understands her role perfectly and isn't trying to press and do too much (as she did at times in Indy).
There is no doubting that is A'ja Wilson's team. And with Chelsea Gray and Jackie Young running the guard position, she is able to play with less pressure and is letting the game come to her.
Sometimes a change of scenery is good for everyone.
And a player is simply a better fit elsewhere.
I think we're seeing that with Smith now.
