I don't see child abuse. I think it was dumb since the intended destination was a pond. This could have gone very badly. But outside of the choice of destination being a bad choice, I don't see it as abuse.

I grew up in the city. I'm pretty sure at 5, I navigated Chicago alone. I was at Goldblatts on state street when I got displaced from my family. I just went home.

At the same time, we had John Gacy grabbing boys and killing them, so there's that. He didn't do the dick down with black boys. So racism paid off for me.

As much as you say it, it ain't the ones who crossed the border you have to worry about. It's them boys who the mom has coddled. Them Jesse Butlers. Jesse is a good boy. He can do no wrong.

That guy is an absolute punk, but plenty of people crossing the border are offenders and also traffickers as well. Let's not downplay the seriousness of either group.

The only issue I have with what mom did is the destination she allowed the kid to go to. Even the best swimmers know you never swim alone. Yes, I know the kid wasn't going to swim, but I was about 5 years old when my two year old brother was standing on the side of the pond holding dad's hand. Dad turned to do something and little brother wasn't there when he turned around. Dad had to rescue him from the pond. He was probably under water less than five seconds, but without adult presence, it could have been fatal.

My point is it wasn't a wise destination to let the five year old go to alone, but I still don't think it rises to the level of child abuse.
