Part of the problem, a big one, is media. If you pay attention to this year's election, candidates are continuing old tricks the media should be calling them on, but is not. For example, here in Texas property taxes are a big worry, and candidates are running ads claiming they lowered property taxes or will abolish them, while their opponents voted for higher property taxes. Thing is, property taxes in Texas are determined at the county level, and in addition to the county a lot of people also pay property taxes for MUD districts and school districts. The taxes are too high, but the candidates running for state/national office are not creating them or stopping them.

I also see ads about this or that candidate bragging how they personally cut costs for insulin, or created a program to address senior care, et cetera, but at best the candidate simply voted for the bill and maybe joined as a co-sponsor once they saw the issue gaining traction. Almost no state or national candidate is actually doing the things they brag about in their commercials.

Sometimes candidates succeed in lying to some degree. John Cornyn sold the line that he voted with Trump "99% of the time", but in truth that was not so, and more to the point Cornyn blocked some things Trump voters wanted well before they came up to a vote, allowing him to say he never voted against the bill while in fact he stopped and blocked things he did not like. Cornyn fooled some people, but obviously not enough since he lost his primary bid to the weakest Senate contender the GOP has seen in decades.

I think "stupid" is the wrong word although there are a lot of stupid Americans. I prefer words like ignorant of disinformed. Although I do appreciate another left-wing writer pretending to be the intellectual barometer than "normies." I did not pay to read his "conspiracy theory" article, but I would be $1,000 it is just so-called conspiracy theirs popular on the right vs. the hundreds on the left.

If Americans were really smart, they would use the many ways they have available to put together a righting of the ship of state. But political activism is too often seen as a far left or far right thing. Political activism of this type needs to happen more often:
- getting your hands dirty by positively influencing your local politics
- working to be a positive influence inside your political party of choice
- fighting the sleaze factor inside your own party's apparatus even if it gets ugly against you

Leaders with integrity to try and do the right thing are needed. They will need us to get them over the line when they do show up once in a while. First by getting them through locals and then bigger primaries.
