Safety recruiting, big-man recruiting, QB visiting, more
- With the commitment of Tyrone Brown, Baylor will focus in on Tyler Owens of Plano East to fill out the safety class for 2019. With Hakeem Vance also in the fold, expectations are that one of those guys would eventually slide down to LB, but they are all being recruiting specifically as safeties right now. The excitement level to have two of those guys with the third within reach is very high. Athletically and potential wise, it's a game changing trio over the course of their careers. - On Brown, he was viewed as a priority by the staff. Evan Cooper and Fran Brown worked that recruitment as if he was a five-star safety from Houston Lamar with offers from all around the country. They wanted him. Bad.- There is apparently some mixed feelings on the recruitment of Anfernee Orji out of Rockwall. For starters, who really knows what position he will end up playing. I do believe he is a take, but if he ends up following his brother to Vanderbilt I don't see it as a miss by the recruiting staff. - Baylor will host QBs Gunner Cruz and Jacob Zeno for the spring game on Saturday. Cruz will actually be in for the weekend and is looking for a better idea of what Baylor is about. "Thrilled!" Cruz said about his upcoming visit. "It should be a great time."On what he's most looking forward to seeing: "Probably the new offense. I have an idea of it, but it'll be great to see live and visualize how I could fit into it."On importance of visit for interest in Baylor: "Anytime I can get out and visit somewhere it's big. I wouldn't say it's make or break, but naturally there will be more or less interest depending on how it goes."- Baylor is still looking at LB/DE Shemar Pearl and the interest is at least mutual, but he's not being made a priority. Right now, I would consider Pearl's interest in Baylor as "warm." With Texas and Texas A&M both looking for bigger fish (and filling up), this could be one that naturally falls Baylor's way if they want to take him. Keep in mind that he holds "offers" from Alabama and Georgia. Those might not be considered valid, but he held them at one time. If Baylor decided to push for him, I think they have a good shot. - If Baylor were to add another grad transfer this fall, it would be as a pass rushing DE. "They are always looking" to improve positions is what I was told. - As far as adding to the class, I'm told that I shouldn't be surprised if Baylor added another commitment or two in the spring range. I don't have a timeline to tell you when, but I think it's worth mentioning as I got the information from one of my more reliable contacts.
