Baylor junior quarterback Gerry Bohanon was named the starter for the season opener on Sunday evening. The news was released on Baylor Football’s social media accounts and came a day after Baylor’s final scrimmage of fall camp.

The fourth-year junior has thrown 194 career yards on 18-of-38 passing with two touchdowns and no interceptions. A dual-threat, Bohanon has rushed for 291 yards three touchdowns on 48 carries.

Bohanon won the starting position over redshirt sophomore Jacob Zeno and redshirt freshman Blake Shapen.

Part of Baylor’s 2018 recruiting class, Bohanon was the No. 234-ranked prospect in the country out of Earle High School in Arkansas.

Baylor is set to open the 2021 season on Saturday, Sept. 4 in a road contest against Texas State.

All the best, Gerry. Hope you prove me wrong, wrong, wrong. To this point...you have been a "thrower"...not a "passer". Nuke Zeno is licking his chops.

As long as he's not as brittle as RG3, we should win 6.

He is much bigger than rg3. Should be more durable but I agree we need to pray he will stay healthy because he will run quite a bit. Same with apu who Is irreplaceable. Same with galvin. Terrell. When everyone is healthy though this team should be very dangerous.

Brewer was a great quarterback but never quite the same after getting hurt. Gerry will be outstanding and if he gets hurt I hope our coaches trust our other quarterbacks that are more than capable also. I predict a 10 win season. Our team has lots of talent. The only question mark is our offensive line. But according to the interviews it seems the coaches and players believe the offensive line is excellent. Baylor football is about to shock the world. They are hungry and have a great coaching staff. Buckle up for a great ride. Sic em...

Yeah 10-2 is going to require I hate saying it but a lot of luck. You win games in the trenches. Our o line isn't even in the top half of the conference. Defense will keep us in a lot of games. 6-6 is my uneducated guess. 8-4 would be my ceiling again. Uneducated guesses on my part

There is a history of running QB's in College being successful. As long as the staff plays to his strengths and not force him to be Brewer, he should be fine. I am excited to see the wide zone scheme. If we have a one-cut and go RB, outside zone can be very successful and cover for some talent discrepancies. Key is the RB, gotta be a one-cut and go guy, not a dancer.

You just described Abram Smith in your last sentence. He could really flourish in this offense.

Having covered both him and Jonah White in high school, I'm excited to see what both can do with more opportunities to run. Those two are special.

I hope so. My limited knowledge of Wide Zone is that it is an outside zone scheme versus the power inside zone. If outside zone is a foundation of the running game, it is different than a gap or man scheme.

RB Coach is just as important as the OL Coach in this scheme, the two have to work together well. RB's have to hit their markers at full speed, identify the hole based on the action of the players cut and go. OL have to be able to move horizontal, not given ground, like a pull. Based on my history of seeing Outside Zone, if run properly, this scheme should have very little negative plays, will bust 2 or 3 long ones a game, and be tough on DL as you run them till they drop.

Does Grimes run Zone/Read? This QB looks like he would really excel with that.

By the way, I am going by a hodge-podge of comments if have read and the personnel choices coming out. If I am offbase, please correct me. I am interested in what they are trying to do philosophically, as well as technically. I love watching a good zone blocking team with the right RB, it is a thing of beauty if you like running games.

IMHO Bohanon has been the most logical, clear choice for a long time now. So this announcement restores some of my fading confidence in Aranda, and that we just might be headed in the right direction regarding the OC's seat.

Let's just hope we don't play the QB carousel circus during games.

I also think having one of the best athletes on your team at quarterback can really given confidence and an edge to everyone else. The OL just blocks differently when they know the QB might break a tackle and bring it to the house. A big, running quarterback can change everything-.

I was in the stands when Vince Young stepped on the field for the first time midway through the season and you could feel the electricity --- the team could feel it too and they responded. He was too fast for most college linemen to catch and too big for most college db's to tackle. Now there are even more db's and they are smaller and faster than when VY played.

When I was at the UTSA game where GB played most of the second half you could feel the energy when he was in there after he broke off his first long run. Last year I dreaded watching our offense. This year I can't wait...
