No. 6 Baylor Tennis Falls to No. 12 Michigan in Ann Arbor

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – No. 6 Baylor men’s tennis fell to No. 12 Michigan on Sunday afternoon at the Varsity Tennis Center, 4-0.

It was just the second loss of the season for the Bears, now 17-2. BU is now 7-2 against ranked opponents for the spring.

THE RUNDOWN

Michigan started the scoring first, taking the doubles point on courts two and three. Court three finished first with UM’s Patrick Maloney and Nick Beaty winning 6-4 over Adrian Boitan and Tadeas Paroulek. No. 18 Sven Lah and Finn Bass defeated No. 10 Andrew Fenty and Nino Ehrenschneider on court one, 6-3 to even it up, but it was No. 50-ranked Ondrej Styler and Gavin Young on court two winning 7-6(5) after a battle with 80th-ranked Matias Soto and Juan Pablo Grassi Mazzuchi.

In singles, the 72nd ranked Wolverine Jacob Bickersteth got the win on court five over Finn Bass, 6-1, 7-5, despite Bass’ push in the second set. No. 41 Sven Lah fell in the first set, 6-2 over Maloney but went on a five-game win streak in the second, only for Maloney to rally back, winning the next six games until Lah grabbed another of his own to take it to a tiebreaker. Maloney took the match with a 7-4 tiebreaker win.

Court six was the clincher, with Michigan’s Beaty taking it in three, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 over Grassi Mazzuchi. No. 42 Boitan went unfinished on court one against Styler, with the Wolverine ahead 7-6(6), 5-3. No. 27 Soto also went unfinished after he and No. 57 Fenty engaged in a three-set tiebreaker, Soto taking the first at 6-4, dropping a 6-3 second and tied at 3-3 when the match was clinched. The last court to go unfinished was Tadeas Paroulek on five, with Young leading 7-6(7), 2-4.

Doubles pair Bass and Lah improve to 9-4 on the spring, while Soto and Grassi Mazzuchi move to 12-4 and Boitan/Paroulek are now 8-3.

On the singles side, Lah is now 10-4, Bass is 11-4 and Grassi Mazzuchi is 15-2 for the dual-match season. Boitan remains 12-0, Soto 8-4 and Paroulek 6-1.

NEXT UP

The Bears will play their last non-conference matchup of the season, this time against TCU on the road at the Friedman Tennis Center in Fort Worth. It will be the second to last of a six-match road stretch for Baylor.
