IRVING, Texas – Baylor baseball sophomore OF Kyle Nevin has been named the Big 12 Player of the Week and sophomore LHP Kobe Andrade has earned Big 12 Co-Newcomer of the Week honors, as announced Monday afternoon by the conference office.

Nevin had an outstanding week at the plate, hitting .563 (9-for-16) with five extra-base hits. The third-year sophomore tallied multiple hits in three of BU’s four games on the week, including tying a season-high twice with three hits. Nevin launched his fifth home run of the season and set a career-high with four RBIs in Baylor’s 19-2 victory over Kansas on Friday. He followed that up with a game-winning blast in Saturday’s series-clinching 6-5 win over the Jayhawks. For the week, Nevin led the Big 12 with nine total hits and 19 total bases, while ranking second in batting average, home runs, RBIs and slugging percentage.

The third-year man out of Poway, Calif., now leads the Bears with six home runs and 36 RBIs on the season. He is tied with Jack Pineda for the team lead in extra-base hits with 17. Nevin has raised his batting average to .275 for the year and is currently riding a career-best 15-game on-base streak.

Andrade was excellent in his Friday start vs. KU, throwing the Bears’ first complete game of the season in the 19-2 victory, which tied the series. The Texas A&M transfer not only surpassed his previous career-high in innings pitched (6.0), he shattered it by going a full nine. He also picked up a career-high four strikeouts, scattering four hits and allowing just two runs without walking a single batter. Andrade recorded 10 first-pitch outs and threw only 88 total pitches, facing the minimum in six separate frames. Furthermore, he faced four batters or fewer in eight of his nine total innings of work. The outing was BU’s first complete game since Tyler Thomas went the distance on April 1, 2021 against North Carolina A&T.

The Corpus Christi native has settled into his role as part of the weekend rotation, posting a 3.42 ERA across his last 26.1 innings pitched. Along with Thomas and sophomore RHP Will Rigney, Baylor’s current weekend rotation has combined for a 3.06 ERA in 2022. Andrade ranks third in the Big 12 with a 0.92 WHIP, seventh in the conference with a .213 opposing batting average and eighth in the league with a 3.20 ERA on the year.

This week’s awards mark Baylor’s second and third weekly accolades of the season, joining Thomas’ Big 12 Pitcher of the Week honor from March 7. Nevin is BU’s first Big 12 Player of the Week since Nick Loftin garnered the nod on April 1, 2019. Andrade is the program’s first Big 12 Newcomer of the Week since Jared McKenzie collected the honors on Feb. 22, 2021.
