Holmes is the most experienced receiver on the roster.

Gavin Holmes is a sixth-year senior wide receiver from Justin, Texas. This is Holmes's final season in Waco, and Baylor’s website has him listed at 5-foot-11, 200 pounds. Injuries have derailed the majority of his career at BU, but it appears Holmes is healthy heading into the season and has taken on a leadership role within an inexperienced wide receiver room. It hasn’t been specified throughout Fall Camp how large of a role Holmes will play this year, but every Baylor fan is rooting for the sixth-year senior to regain success on the field.

Holmes was able to return to the field in 2020 and started in each of Baylor’s nine games during the shortened Covid season. He finished second on the team in receptions with 33 and third on the team with 244 receiving yards. Holmes had a career game against Texas, hauling in a career-best nine receptions for 57 yards and a TD, his first since 2017. After what seemed like a career resurgence, the Justin native missed all of the 2021 season with an injury.

Holmes played in nine games as a true freshman before injuries interrupted his career.

As a true freshman in 2017, Holmes played in nine contests and started four of those. He hit his stride mid-season, catching five passes against West Virginia and four catches for 66 yards and two TDs against Kansas. But the following week, Holmes’s promising freshman season came to an end after suffering a torn ACL against Texas Tech. Complications from that injury only allowed the talented three-star recruit to see time in one game over the following two seasons.

Holmes was an All-State and three-time All-District receiver at Northwest High School in Justin, Texas. 247 rated Holmes as the No. 66 player in Texas and the No. 70 receiver in the nation. He amassed 2,700 yards from scrimmage and 27 TDs in three seasons on varsity. In Homes’s All-State & District 6-5A Offensive MVP senior campaign, he led Northwest to a 10-2 record and their first playoff wins in program history. In 2016, Holmes also totaled 83 receptions for 1,549 yards and 15 TDs. After initially giving Iowa his pledge, Holmes flipped to Baylor over Nebraska and Arizona State in Matt Rhule’s first official recruiting class in 2017.
