Ten Thoughts: Baylor versus SMU

Baylor started slow, looked sluggish, but pulled away in the 3rd quarter. Here are my ten thoughts on the Bears against SMU.

  1. May the first half team never show up again on the field in the 2016 season. Lethargic is a word I have rarely used for Baylor in almost ten years, but it is the mildest word I can think of for the first half. If not for the defense, Baylor would have been in a hole.
  2. Chad Morris, your name should be in the mix to be the next coach at Baylor. While undermanned with a redshirt freshman backup quarterback and one NFL wide receiver, you had a gameplan to limit Baylor's offense early. Your offense racked up yards, but athleticism finally caught up to SMU, but the scheme was impressive on both sides of the ball.
  3.  Burn the tape on first half Seth Russell, just burn it, but learn from it. The indecisiveness on throws left them late and hard to catch for wide receivers. The second half showed a better Russell as his timing got better after a scramble for a touchdown.
  4. Chris Platt has great speed, but will need some time with the JUGGS machine soon. There were two touchdowns left on the field from drops.
  5. Orion Stewart looks like he is back to his 2014 form after playing much of 2015 injured. His pick six was impressive and the interception in the end zone was possibly a game saver.
  6. Davion Hall should have been a safety the past two years. The Liberty-Eylau product should start the next two years before going to the NFL. His interception turned momentum and gave Baylor a spark.
  7. Blake Lynch made a freshman mistake, but looked like one of the best receivers on the field again. Lynch has a bright future for the next 10 years.
  8. Here's a tip to special teams, quit holding and blocking defenders in the back after Tony Nicholson has run past you. He just needs a crease and not something to draw a penalty.
  9. It was tough sledding inside the tackles with SMU flooding the gaps with linebackers to limit Baylor on the ground. The running back committee of three did struggle for yards but kept Russell upright and got tough yards.
  10. Need to remain healthy and losing Reid and Stricklin is not a good sign for the season. Reid looks to have an ankle sprain so he should be back Friday or the following game.
  11. Bonus thought for the game. White outs rarely have a good atmosphere for some reason and well, stop scheduling them.
