Baylor Baseball Drops Series Opener to Kansas State, 8-1
WACO, Texas – Baylor baseball (6-12) fell in the conference opener to Kansas State (13-5), 8-1, on Friday night at Baylor Ballpark.
In the loss, Baylor’s offense combined for six hits and left seven runners on base. Sophomore catcher Cortlan Castle and junior infielder Cole Posey both had multi-hit games. Freshman INF Kolby Branch extended his on-base streak to 18 games.
Fifth-year senior RHP Blake Helton started on the mound for the Bears on Friday night and struggled again. Kansas State put up three runs in the first inning, and Helton finished allowing five runs, four earned runs, eight hits and three walks in five innings pitched. Helton’s ERA currently sits at 7.77.
In the bottom of the third, junior Hunter Simmons hit a sacrifice fly into left field to score Castle and cut the KSU lead to 4-1.
Juniors Adam Muirhead and Jared Matheson pitched in relief of Helton and surrendered a combined six walks and three earned runs in 2.2 innings pitched.
