Baylor Adds Transfer Post

March 30, 2023

Nicki Collen and staff picked up a much needed piece for the 2023/24 season in 6-3 post/forward Madison Bartley of Belmont. Bartley entered the transfer portal on March 21 and visited Baylor the following week. On the court, Bartley averaged 14 points on 51% shooting from the field. She also collected 5 rebounds a game on the way to being named First Team Missouri Valley Conference. She became the 34th player in Belmont history to score 1000 points in her final game for the Bruins.

Bartley will add depth and strength to the frontcourt alongside standout freshmen Bella Fontleroy and Dariana Littlepage-Buggs filling the role departing senior Caitlan Bickle played.

Feel much better about our post depth and hopefully Abraham can continue to improve. Still need a tall guard who can play defense who will give us a chance to switch in defense and not get matched up against a post player who is so much taller- as was the game plan for many teams we played last year. I pray that the Iowa State guard is still available and we have something strong to sell her on. Would seem to be the perfect fit both offensively, defensively and at the free throw line.

I share your hope. Just fear that geography is too far a bridge to cross for her. But she is not the only fish in the sea. I'm sure the staff has a broader radar than just what we read on message boards...even international.

Watched some highlights of Madison today. Specifically from last years NCAA tournament. Belmont played Oregon in first round and beat them in double overtime. She scored 8 points and had 7 rebounds. In the second round they played Tennessee (on their court) and lost by 3 points as the game went down to the last minute. Madison had 16 points and 6 rebounds. I would describe her game as solid. In some regards she will remind you of Caitlin. Not overly athletic but seems to really understands the game, some clever moves around the basket, and a nice 3 point shot and solid passer. Oregon had the twin towers in the post that year so she battled against that. I think she will be a solid post player with tournament experience next year as Kyla continues to develop and Lety can adjust to college ball.

Madison also was impressive in the post game conference after the loss to Tennessee.

Would UConn or South Carolina or LSU accept this transfer? Not excited at our drop off.

I feel like her being able to shoot the three helps space the floor for a player like Aijha or even Lety. You can see it right now with Iowa Sagging South Carolina, nobody can do that with Lety, Kyla, Aijha, Dree if we have shooters everywhere. She has a solid frame for the Pick and Roll and seems to be very strong. Watching highlights she plays the X's and O's very well she is not going to be the most athletic and does not play a lot of minutes. We will be able to split the 5 spots 3 ways.

I think Aijha and Bella hold down the 3
Dree and Buggs can handle the 4
Madison, Kyla, and Lety all give us different looks at the 5

Our Staff is fixing the issues that we had last year just like they did with the small guard thing the year before. We just had some of the worst luck we did not get to see that play out the way she visioned.
If we can get a player that wants to play the two spot that can defend lights out, shoot the 3, and is a good 5'11 to 6'0. I really would not see a weakness in this team.

We see how our staff can develop talent, look at Jaden's development, especially at the beginning of the season. I would expect Jana to be ready to go to either be the second SG. I do not see a weakness because we would have everything. If we need another big 2 hopefully Cat can slow it down and develop as well. We will be DANGEROUS and I know CNC is hungry!!!!!

My thoughts too. Are there very many players out there who can do all that? Are any of them available?

It would be wonderful if we could round out our roster with 1-2 players with the necessary attributes & skills. It seems like a tall order. But what do I know?

Yes, she would!! another player that could work is Jakia Brown-Turner out of NC State. She is listed as a wing but she can shoot and defend. She will bring a lot of experience, she is super athletic.

Quincy Noble could also be one we look at out of North Texas. She is from Mckinny and wants to go to a place where she can get ready for the next level.

Lexi would be great and Nicki is also a Wisconsin girl so maybe she can convenience her that the warm weather is not too bad and that when it snows school is canceled.

CNC is very big that the transfers have to vibe and connect with the team that is already there. I still remember the videos of Jaden with Aijha and Dree when they visited. I am super excited to see what we do!! I know Coach Nicki will work to have the best product on the court!!

I think there are some and the fact that we have CNC as our coach is going to help us a lot!! We hear her in the press conferences and her knowledge of the game just imagine the pitches she can make to these athletes. She will be able to give footage of what we do and how they can fit!! She is a people person!! It is going to help with recruiting and this balancing of the portal.

Think we have a chance??
I believe we will be a contender next season. Last year opponents went on too many runs against us. We will have more quality depth next year and should defend better. If Aijha is healthy we will have a consistent dependable scoring option that was missing last year. Buggs will be a consistent midrange shooter and Bella will be a 3 point threat. When you add Dre to that mix we will be able to defend and score at a higher level. I think Sarah will be even better next year with a stronger group around her. At the risk of being redundant the missing piece is a shooting guard/wing with length. Ferreira has the length but she seems to be more of a 4 without the ball handling skills needed.

See I think Aijha and Bella play the wing for us next season and Buggs and Edwards in the 4. Bella and Aijha you can move in and out. I want to say Aijha can shoot the three. She can post up a 3 guard. She can take a bigger defender off the bounce very well. Bella will just be able to grow so much being in the 3 spots and being able to stay there. She definitely will be able to post up a wing player. She can shoot the three, and she is a sponge so I can only imagine her growth this offseason.

I think Buggs and Edwards give you something different. Buggs should start developing a shot from beyond the arch and developing a solid handle so she can take people off the bounce. I think she is so crafty that once she adds more weapons her size disadvantage becomes a lot less of an issue. On the defensive end, she might be smaller but the heart is one of the biggest I have seen.

Buggs shot much better from midrange as the season wore on. If she can develop a 3 point shot defenders will have to come out and guard her and I can see her blowing past people. Her defense and rebounding is a joy to watch. So many more options. I'm ready to watch CNC cook with them.

She was shooting them is the Mcdonald's All American Game if i can remember. Even if she can just get them on a flare of the pick that alone would be deadly for her. She is a player with a ton of heart and fire!! And playing a freshman that much has to do some good going into next season!!

We need to roll out the NIL for a few top players. We need to go head to head with Mulkey and win. The NIL in WBB is much lower than CFB or MBB. We can do this.

a huge season next year will help with recruiting, we said that about this past season but the players we were counting on did not play. I am super excited to see how this next season goes.

Madison was a Robin at her old school she is a sneaky shooter, reminds me a lot of Bickle. I'd Aijha is a 3 and is posting up guards it's over for teams. Look what she did against 5's at Mizzou. Look what she did against us when she was in Waco!! This team will be dangerous.

CNC says that Dree is one of the best she has seen play off the pick and roll and sets a wonderful screen. Free reminds me a lot of Alyssa Thomas from the connecticut sun. She is undersized uses her body well and is crafty. And we have our freshman to come off the bench that is going to just be wild!!

Edwards can play as a stretch 4 or a 5. She is undersized as the latter but due to her strong build, she can hold her own.

Her performance in the SEC tournament last season against South Carolina was Edwards at her best.

I know she hit the winning 3 pointer, but didn't she guard guard Boston, at least part of the time?
Brusinbear2001

I want to say they did a sagging zone like everyone else. I have to go back and watch. I do think it was her and Treasure Hunt that guarded Boston.

Yes, Dree can shoot the three so just look how much more you can do off of a screen she sets. She can roll, flare out and shoot, the versatility of all of them will make it hard to guard this offense.

Good point. We won't be challenging for a championship any time soon with CNC. Nice person, just not a college coach. The cliff dive she has lead since Kim left is pretty bad. She is full of excuse why.

Mack got what he wanted. A coach opposite of Kim.

Happens to be not only opposite of Kim personality, wins and loses too.

New norm for football and lady hoops.

That is pretty quick and Harsh Judgement against a young lady's abilities unless you've seen her play extensively. Belmont is really good and made the tournament lately, even won more march madness games than we have recently. While I think NC needs to win in bunches this year and make at least a sweet 16 with our experienced players, only one freshman on the team, I would not make a call on Bartley's abilities until I see her in at least three games. I like her size, attitude, and potential. Let's give her a chance to perform before we prophetically criticize.
