Baylor Baseball adds Former Freshman All-American Outfielder from Gonzaga

Enzo Apodaca, a rising redshirt junior and former Freshman All-American center fielder from Gonzaga, becomes the fifth player to commit to Mitch Thompson and the Baylor baseball program from the transfer portal, per D1Baseball’s Transfer Tracker.

Apodaca will likely be the Bears' starting CF for the 2024 season.

Apodaca, originally from Scottsdale, Arizona, started all 52 games for the Zags in 2023 and hit .281, scored 39 runs, racked up 13 doubles and got on base at a .382 clip.

The 5-foot-9, 180-pound outfielder redshirted the 2021 season and in his Freshman All-American campaign in 2022, started 55 games, hit .271, totaled 24 extra-base hits and held a .358 on-base percentage.

He was also an All-Star in the Cape Cod League this summer, hitting .313 with a .413 on-base percentage across 64 at-bats for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox as of July 18.

While it’s evident Thompson and his staff still need pitching depth, Apodaca is an immediate impact player who will likely be atop the Bears’ lineup from the onset. 

Incoming MCC transfer Ty Johnson, who was slated to start in center field next season, can also play second base, which gives the coaching staff much-needed versatility.

Apodaca is the Bears' fifth addition from the portal this summer, joining Ryan Martinez (SS, San Francisco), Mason Greer (1B, Missouri State), Patrick Hail (RHP, Lamar) and Jack Little (INF, Wichita State) as the four others.

Baylor baseball has added five players in the portal this offseason.

Currently, the 2024 squad includes 23 returnees, 13 incoming freshmen, six incoming JUCO additions and five portal additions. Assistant coach Zach Dillon stated that the staff wants 47-50 players competing for 40 spots in the fall.
