Why I'm Optimistic About Jeff Grimes and the Baylor Offense

I have a new theory when it comes to Baylor’s offensive performances under Grimes.

The offense either works or it doesn’t.

That might sound simple, so let me explain.

When you go back through 2021, 2022, and now 2023, you can break each game up into 2 buckets: Could Baylor’s offense establish the wide zone or not?

In 2021, that answer was almost always “yes.” And when the answer is yes, it usually means that Baylor is somewhat easily able to get to ~27+ points.

Why I'm Optimistic About Jeff Grimes and the Baylor Offense

While it can work with the right talent, it needs to change and be developed for lesser talent.

For that reason I'm not optimistic.

Grimes is unable to adapt to existing personnel. Most any coach can win with talented players. It's when we have less talent where the truly gifted coaches show their true worth, or lack thereof.

That's why I say we need to finesse these teams and spread it out more. Stop trying to overpower them. Get the ball out quickly.

Talent level down. Abram Smith made it work with better o.line. Wil not work with this o. line..

We need better talent but does better talent want to play in this dull offense? If they did we would be recruiting great talent. Not the case. Can this staff grow 3 stars into 4 stars? We probably won't get to see.

They look a step slow and confused. Doesn't reflect well on coaching or recruiting

These are the same folks who are notoriously wrong in prognostications and predictions over and over again. Why would you lend any of the "analysis" credence. And thats no disrespect.. just reality.

Even if it "worked," would still be a dull limited system.

I feel for Travis....definitely drew the short straw in having to write this piece for the month....

Not UCF! They will run with anyone.

They're never going to be too harsh on Grimes or anyone associated with Baylor. It's a business and they need coaches and other athletic department personnel to come do interviews. All positivity coming from employees of the website should be taken with a grain of salt

Ridiculous. Not even the author believes this. Offense was bad even when we won the Big 12.

Nah, Grimes can't get the job done. If he doesn't have a defense that essentially keeps the other team off the field, then he's not going to get points on the board, especially with a less than stellar O line.

We need a OC that can generate points. We are not going to get the level of OL to play the grind it and hold the ball for 12 minute drives that Grimes wants. We need a creator type, a Briles, Leach type that figured how to take what the D gives. Briles and Leach understood that they had to score to put pressure on the other team to stay competitive with better stocked teams.

The part Briles couldn't figure out in the era he coached was the D, he had to bring in borderline character guys. Briles would excel in this era of NIL, he could compete better on the recruiting trail. The one thing Briles could do better than Aranda or Grimes is identify talent that could translate to the B12.

Couldn't agree more. Need someone more creative, been saying it since the Championship season. He doesn't have what it takes, and it showed even then. Without an A+ Defense, Grimes isn't going to get the job done.

Not saying I was satisfied with Briles defense , but when you have an offense that scores ,on average, in less than two minutes, you really need MORE depth on defense that teams who score with drives that last 5 minutes or more. That is a tall order, but Briles was getting closer to being able to do that when the sh-- hit the fan.

He got to where we put the pressure on the other team to react. Was it perfect, no. But he had Baylor in the discussion as a threat to win it all. That never happened before or since.

Here's a fact. If you score more on your possessions than the other team does on their possessions you almost always win.

I'm guessing Travis started taking happy pills before writing this, because you'd have to be medicated to be hopeful that Grimes is going to get good.

Travis must not have looked at the stats in this game to see rushing stats. It took two years of poor recruiting of linemen to get the pourous line that we have today. There was a reason that two line transfers came from BY. Poor recruiting and player selection is a Coach problem. Aranda was not able to maintain the talent stream that Rhule was developing. As soon as Rhule players graduated or left, the cupboard was bare with a few exceptions, but those players couldn't fill all holes left in the line.

To have Reese on the team and get no production from him because the defense is on him at the snap is setting Reese up to transfer to a team that can block at the end of the season. I can't see Aranda turning this around this year, and we will see that on the recruiting trail.

Insanity is defined as doing the same thing and expecting different results. Bill Beall came to Baylor after being DC at LSU with no head coaching experience, and we won 3 games over three seasons. Aranda came to Baylor after being DC at LSU with no head coaching experience, and even though he has more wins with players he did not recruit, he is driving the program over the cliff. Why should we expect any different result unless we are insane?

Corrections in staff need to be made now if there are any expectations of a successful program next year and thereafter. If not we won't be able to attract the athletes we need to be successful. Recruits are watching.
