Gameday Thread: No. 21 Baylor vs. Harvard

WACO, Texas – The No. 21 Baylor women’s basketball team continues its five-game homestand on Sunday when it hosts Harvard at 1 p.m. at the Ferrell Center.

The contest is available for streaming via Big 12 Now on ESPN+ and a live radio broadcast on ESPN Central Texas (1660 AM/92.3 FM) is also available for fans. Live in-game updates will be provided via Twitter and live stats. 

STARTING FIVE

  • Baylor defeated the No. 4 Utah Utes, 84-77, at the Ferrell Center Tuesday night. Senior guard Sarah Andrewspoured in 18 points, going a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe and went a game-high 4-for-6 from range.
  • The 84 points scored by the Bears were the most against a top-10 opponent in a regular-season, non-overtime game since scoring 87 at No. 9 Iowa State on Feb. 28, 2022. Additionally, it was most points scored against a top-five opponent in the regular season since netting 94 against No. 2 Notre Dame on Nov. 20, 2011.
  • Baylor’s win over the Utes marked the Bears’ first top-four win since beating No. 1 UConn, 74-58, on Jan. 9, 2020, and it was the first top-four win at home since beating the Huskies, 68-57, on Jan. 3, 2019.
  • On Tuesday, Andrews and Darianna Littlepage-Buggs were each named to the Wooden Award Preseason Top 50 Watch List. They were two of six Big 12 student-athletes to make the list.
  • Sunday’s matchup with Harvard will mark the first-ever meeting between the Bears and the Crimson and the first Ivy League opponent for head coach Nicki Collen.

SCOUTING THE CRIMSON

Harvard is 3-1 to start the year with its only loss coming at the hands of then-No. 14 Maryland in its season opener on Nov. 6. The Crimson are playing 11 of their 13 nonconference games on the road in the 2023-24 season. The Crimson have four players averaging double figures led by Harmoni Turner’s 20 points per game.

In Carrie Moore’s first year as head coach in 2022-23, Harvard posted a 20-win season for the first time since 2016-17, making its first Ivy Madness championship game appearance, and advancing to the fourth round of a postseason for the first time in program history with its trip to the WNIT Great 8.

Harvard was pretty scrappy in the first half, but so far in the third they've had a harder time hitting shots than admitting straight white Protestant males.

I think a little of both.

Our depth is a big plus this year.

Teams with bigs will hurt us. But, we are mud more well rounded.

…maybe not, but I do think they are in the top 10-12. It was a very good early win and test for our Baylor team. It's a long season. It's 78-67 BU with 1:18 left in Q4.

I agree top 10-12 for sure.

We are better than our ranking too.

not a perfectly played game but avoided the let down loss. Harvard has a pretty good team. 14 is their star and they have shooters around her. defense still has lapses and gives up layups/open 3's and O got a little sloppy at times today. but love the depth of this team. we should flex our muscles friday against McNeese

Balanced scoring, great % from the field. Good defensive %. Got out rebounded and they made 10 3-pointers. Solid win against a solid team.

They had two very good shooters. Mullaney better at 3-shot than Turner, who could pretty much throw up anything and score. They played 38 and 40 minutes respectively.

Was surprised to hear postgame Harmoni was 9 for 26. Seemed more efficient than that. Their #20 had a quick release and was deadly in catch and shoot and if she could get her feet set but not if we forced her to move when shooting.

I suspect Harvard will rebound from this loss the way most straight white Protestant males will rebound from not getting into Harvard.

I think our girls were already headed to thanksgiving in their minds. We seemed to only expend the exact amount of energy needed to win by a small margin. Hard to play 100% on a sleepy thanksgiving week with empty arena and a break in their sights. Oh well, a W is W and we will hope for more motivation when needed.
