No. 25 Baylor Has Conference Winning Streak Snapped against No. 9 TCU, Bears Fall 80-75
FORT WORTH – No. 25 Baylor women’s basketball (16-5, 6-2) had its six-game conference winning streak snapped with an 80-75 loss to the rival No. 9 TCU Horned Frogs (20-2, 8-1) at Schollmaier Arena on Sunday afternoon.
Guard Sarah Andrews (Sr.) led the Bears with a team-high 21 points and drilled five 3-pointers. Guard Aliyah Matharu (Sr.) added 14 points off the bench for Baylor.
The defeat marked the Bears' first loss to the Horned Frogs since 1990. In the loss, Baylor was outrebounded 45 to 34 and shot 37% (28-76) from the floor, compared to TCU’s 52% (27-52).
Similar to against No. 1 UCLA, the Bears started sluggish on offense and trailed the Horned Frogs, 17-11, at the end of the first period. TCU turned the ball over eight times in the first quarter alone, but Baylor struggled to capitalize on the miscues and scored just four points off turnovers.
Andrews carried the Bears in the second quarter, draining three shots beyond the arc and scoring 13 of her 21 points.
Baylor had its chances to cut into the Horned Frogs’ lead but struggled on the glass and was out-rebounded in the first half, 27-to-11. The Bears also had trouble defending TCU’s elite shooters, and the Horned Frogs started the game shooting 70% (7-10) from deep.
The Bears trailed 42-31 at the end of the second quarter.
TCU center Sedona Prince (Sr.) closed the contest with a team-high 24 points, 14 rebounds and three blocks. Meanwhile, Baylor’s Aaronette Vonleh (Sr.) had nine points and two rebounds. The Preseason Big 12 Newcomer of the Year has 11 points across her last two games.
The Horned Frogs opened the third quarter on a 13-2 run. TCU guard Madison Conner (Sr.) added seven of her 21 points in the third quarter and shot 4-of-8 from deep.
The Bears clawed back in the fourth quarter, went on a 14-to-7 run to close the contest and outscored the Horned Frogs 26-to-18 in the final period. Forward Darianna Littlepage-Buggs (Jr.) was limited to seven points on 1-of-8 shooting.
In the defeat, Baylor shot 65% (11-17) from the free-throw line.
The Bears will travel to Orlando on Wednesday, Jan. 29, to face UCF (7-11, 0-8). Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Addition Financial Arena and will be streamed on ESPN+.
