Something to Believe In: Why DJ Lagway is Just the Spark Baylor Football Needed

Florida transfer quarterback DJ Lagway has officially signed with Baylor, following an interesting last week and a half, SicEm365 has learned.

Less than 24 hours after the news broke that Lagway had verbally committed to head coach Dave Aranda and the Bears on Thursday, Jan. 7, ESPN reported that Lagway would continue to take visits, specifically to Ole Miss.

Reports from David Smoak (365 Sports) and Colt Barber (SicEm365), however, maintained that Lagway spent Friday, Jan. 8, acting as if he were committed to the Bears and making phone calls to help replenish a roster that lost the majority of its production to graduation and the transfer portal.

Fans, however, remained nervous until Lagway’s name was on the dotted lines, which didn’t officially happen until today, Sunday, Jan. 18, concluding the saga in favor of Aranda and the Bears.

Lagway is a consensus top-10 quarterback and top-25 overall prospect in the transfer portal rankings. DJ is also a Baylor legacy, as his father, Derek, played running back for the Bears from 1997 to 2001.

Across his two seasons with the Gators, Lagway threw for over 4,000 yards and 28 touchdowns with a 61% completion percentage, while rushing for 237 yards and two scores on the ground.

The Baylor legacy was the No. 1 quarterback in the nation for the 2024 recruiting class and a five-star prospect, according to 247Sports. The Willis, Texas, product chose Florida over virtually every school in the nation.

Lagway is set to become the highest-ranked high school prospect Baylor has ever rostered and has two years of eligibility remaining.

I hope somehow we manage to scheme up an offense to help him be semi successful. We know we won't have a run game or a good O line, let's hope he doesn't take 50 sacks next year

Looking to the future. In noticed while checking out his Dad's Twitter while looking for any news on this, that DJ has a cousin who is a freshman and starting QB for Wylie High who was named all Max Preps QB. I don't follow high school really but I would think a 14 year old kid who is a starter at a 6a HS in Texas is already alone an indication he must be really good.

His family will pull the plug QUICK

He could have gotten $2 million elsewhere, and would have if there was no family connection to Baylor. This isn't hard. $2 million isn't even a lot of money for a quarterback anymore.

The only reason Baylor was in the conversation for him out of high school and now is because Derek played here and he grew up around the program. To suggest otherwise is silly.

And you base this on what exactly? Just pure conjecture with no basis whatsoever in reality or on the player's history.

DJ Lagway just played through injury all year for a 4-8 Florida team with no head coach. I don't think he or his family are anti-competition. In fact, I know his dad's not because I watched him play.

For the life of me, I can't understand why some people want to be pissed off because we brought in starting QB who was the friggin' top recruit in the nation 2 years ago..

Presently, the signing and his "potential" is the only thing
most fans have to cling to for the upcoming season. Fans know all the +'s & -'s going into August, '26. Fingers are crossed he could be the catalyst to start the season off with more than 10K fans in McLane and maybe a win or two for hope. A lot on one guy.

Of course I can't "name them" because I'm not privy to that information. But neither are you. Baylor made the best offer from his perspective. But if you honestly believe he didn't have other options…. that's absolutely ridiculous.
