No. 6 Baylor Tennis to Take on No. 4 Wake Forest in a Tight Road Match
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – No. 6 Baylor men’s tennis (7-3) is set to play No. 4 Wake Forest (8-2) at noon CT on Sunday, Feb. 22nd, at the Wake Forest Tennis Center.
The Bears are coming off a loss against No. 7 University of Texas in the semifinals of the ITA National Indoor Championship but are still riding the high of defeating No. 9 UCF in the first round and No. 3 Wake Forest in the quarterfinals.
The hard-fought match against the Demon Deacons during the tournament was secured by Devin Badenhorst pulling through with a thrilling final score of 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(4) to take the victory over Wake’s No. 17 Dhakshineswar Suresh.
Wake Forest boasts an impressive roster with five ranked singles players including No. 17 Suresh, No. 21 Luc Pow, No. 59 Mees Rottgering, No. 65 Aryan Shah and No. 76 Andrew Delgado as well as its No. 2 ranked doubles team of Delgado and Suresh.
Based on most recent ITA rankings, Baylor has rose in spots, leading the Big 12 in team rankings at No. 6. The Bears have four singles players on ITA’s list including, No. 13 Badenhorst, No. 27 Connor Van Schalkwyk, No. 39 Zsombor Velcz, and No. 73 Alexandru Chirita. Notably, Velcz rose 67 spots over two weeks after going 5-1 and earning Big 12 Player of the Week honors.
