Ten Things: Baylor vs. Duke

September 15, 2018

Baylor and Duke squared off Saturday September 15. Here are the ten things noticed during the game.

  1. James Lynch is a stud
  2. Not sure what the game plan consisted of today
  3. Special teams didnt show up outside of the punt block
  4. There were more drops by the WRs than at an EMD concert
  5. Sleepwalking the first half is no way to go through games
  6. I don't understand the QB rotation after Brewer led the team to a TD
  7. Need more tempo on offense
  8. Tyquan Thornton‍ could have a big career
  9. Nothing positive about the game plan
  10. Beating Kansas is a must

2. Our head coach is bad
3. Our offensive coach is bad
4. Our defensive coach is bad

Number 6 all the way. It is so damn frustrating. The one thing Rhule can directly control that happens on the field and he still chooses not to. It's week 3, down 2 TDS and we are still switching out the QBs.

And running out clock like a bunch of sloths. WOW, just WOW.

we are the only team to score on Duke in the 4th qtr in the last 8 games. So there is that...

6 7 and 8 all the way. Drove me crazy how slow we were running in the 4th. One time we went out of bounds but clock didn't stop and our guys were walking back to the line of scrimmage. I like being able to go with slow tempo, but we need to be able to go fast, too. We milked way too much clock in the 4th. And I don't get the QB swapping...

We have the wrong head coach.

I think you mean EDM. But whatever, that music sucks to my old ears anyway.

1. I shudder to think what this game would have been like had Duke come into it healthy.
2. It's clear by now that the reason McClendon was not playing at NC State was NOT because of who he was sitting behind.
3. The offensive play calling is boring, unimaginative and worst of all, predictable.
4. If Denzel Mims was not hurt or suspended, then someone needs to explain how he could not even have ONE target today.
5. Not being able to call plays on time on offense and having to burn timeouts early in the game is STILL a problem.
6. Giving up big plays on defense is STILL a problem.
7. For as much as Rhule talks about being tough, this program has become extremely soft on both sides of the ball.
8. There will be people on this site that will come up with obscure stats or numbers to try and make this game look better than it actually was. There will then people that will use that to continue to defend this poor performance. It happened repeatedly last year, and it will happen again.
9. Kansas has more P5 wins this season than Baylor.
10. Rhule has talked about having a balance on the team between offense, defense, and special teams. He got it this game as Baylor was really bad on all 3 sides of the ball in this game.
11. Rhule will not place ANY of the blame of this **** show on either the coaches or the coaching.
12. David Cutcliffe is a MUCH better X's and O's coach than CMR.

1. Rhule needs to quit promising QB transfers that they will have playing time (Soloman and McClendon)
2. Elway might not be able to win with our offensive line.
3. Our sidelines look like a nursing home. Can someone show some energy?
4. Our fanbase...really? That was a lame crowd. Get to the games!
5. Our blown coverages today were epic. I could have caught those passes and scored.
6. Have I said that we should play BREWER?! We are ruining that kid. We have him 2 more years. Play him!
7. I don't care if our receivers are fast if they have brick hands.
8. Show some urgency when you are down by 17 in the 4th.
9. Our offensive gamplan is...run up the middle for 2 yards and run for your life on the next 2 downs.
10. Teach the kids how and when to fair catch a ball.

In all seriousness, I wanted Rhule to win at BU. Today was a debacle. We are a team without an identity. We can't run this offense without the horses and we are never going to have those players when we are recruiting against Texas, Texas A&M, and other Big 12 schools. Briles evened the playing field by being innovative. If Rhule has to stay, then we need to completely change the offense. He needs to bring in someone who is the best offensive mind in the business (and not the one we fired).

No need to break it down. It's simple. This team sucks and it's squarely on the coaches who are completely lost and have no real game plan.

We are back to the days of having a losing team with a couple of bright spots like James Lynch who make exceptional plays in a game we still lose by 20.

1 O-line needs to be fixed, fast. Our QBs have no time to make pass plays or set up anything. Both were scrambling all day.
2 Kicking game was off. Hope that didn't screw Martin's confidence.
3 It was really hot in the sun yesterday. Really hot. Combine that with the play during the first half, I'm giving the fans a pass for now.
4 We need a new OC if we are gonna win. I'd fire the two we have, now, and give McGuire a shot. But that ain't happening.
5 What the heck happened to fundamentals? Catching. Blocking. C'mon, man. We got to do better.

This has been driving me nuts, especially on kickoffs. Are Rhule and the players aware of the new touchback fair catch rule?

Rhoades is responsible for the head coach. Rhule is responsible for the rest of the coaches.

Clock seems to be running.

Exactly why the blame for this needs to go to a poor game plan on offense. This team has talent. I don't understand what we are trying to do on offense nor do I understand the scheme. We need continuity and for a qb to finally be chosen. This doesn't just hurt the pass game. This hurts the run game as well. Brewer is the guy and needs to stay the guy. McClendon is not Russel Wilson. Unless he was that he shouldn't have taken these snaps from a young qb still learning. If anything with the new redshirt rules snaps should have gone to Bohanon at the end of games.

We're not running spread. Not truly running a pro. Calls coming in late. This loss is on the coaches as much as it's on the players. Defense to be honest is not bad. That one players need to make plays. Schematically they are in position to make plays and aren't. Lynch is the only guy who is playing at a high level. He's a disruptive pass rusher and run stopper and more importantly he keeps contain. He doesn't go outside his assignments. We need everyone else to just do their jobs. Secondary needs to stop looking into the backfield. Don't know why they do. That's why they get beat on those double move plays. The second touchdown by Duke should never have happened. DB gets faked out by the ball fake. If his eyes were on his man it wouldn't have happened. I teach my young dbs to keep your eyes on the receivers hips. It's hard for them to sink them on fakes because they need to get out on the breaks for timing reasons. Don't look for the ball unless you hear pass or run. Defensive backs, mainly cornerbacks should not get beat on ball fakes. It wasn't even a double move. He was playing the screen and trying to make a play on a guy that wasn't his. It's frustrating to watch all around because you can see how good these guys are supposed to be.

We need to conclude the experiments. I wish Rhule would just stay true to himself and run the pro offense he ran in Temple. You're not appeasing anyone with the faux spread. Run what you know except with tempo and with some RPOs. Add some gadget and trick plays and miss up formations and you're good. Nixon is not creative at all. And the Chip Kelly version of the spread is too simplistic and makes it too easy to key in on plays. It doesn't work. It's not even working for Chip right now in UCLA who is also trying to run the NFL San Fran. version of it in his second life as a college coach. You can tell he's trying to get back in the league.

Best Baylor hit was on the Duke 66 years touchdown. BU defender came from middle of the field and laid a hit on the only Bear in a position to make a tackle.
