Yeah and to all those ways. Cocaine was a helluva drug back in the 80s.

More regional, but I remember the Funks, Rapid Ricky Romero and Gorgeous George and others from Saturday AM Big Time Wrestling on Lubbock TV

I always admired the "talkers".

Savage
Flair
Rock
Hogan
Etc etc...

And the insane, crazy people
Warrior
Gangrel
Mankind

And the ones who say very little
Undertaker
Kane
Andre

And ones that were simply awesome
Stone Cold
Nash
Sting
Winning by cheating is just as impressive as winning fairly, probably even more so. Your opponent was better than you in every way, and you beat them with your brain.

Not sure I've heard of that many sons dying in one family unnaturally since the 5 Sullivan brothers aboard the USS Juneau in WWII.

The first Von Erich one, Jack Jr, was electrocuted as a little kid.

Saw some folks having fun with the old Sportatorium wrestlers like the Von Erichs (Adkisson from Lake Dallas) and Ivan Putski and Chief Wahoo McDaniels.

This should be fun.

I would tune in to Channel 11 when it came in on the Waco airwaves which was always questionable in the 60's Great fun in those days.

We all knew it was fake but we didnt really care.

I remember when my older brother told me rasslin was fake. I lept from the top bunk (we didnt have a ring) and penned him to the floor. I then bashed him in the head with a folding chair (we did have those)) and took a victory lap around the bedroom lol. Didn't seem so fake to him after that.

My favorites from the Sportatorium days were:

1. Chief Wahoo (always reminded me of Buddy Hackett)
2. Fritz
3. Black Jack Mulligan (didn't appear often enough)
4. Ivan Putski

My grandparents would watch Houston Wrestling every Friday night. Paul Boesch announcing. You couldn't convince them it was fake.

I remember it like it was yesterday. And it was sponsored by Bill Varley Tire Store. Except that Bill had a tremendous lisp so it came out, "Bill Wally Tie Toe". My saintly grandmother would come as close to cussing as she probably ever did in her life when that Ivan Putski would come in the ring. "Kill him! Kill him!"

I never went but I remember the wrestling gymnasium on Waco Drive on the east side of the Brazos. Also I would work selling cold drinks when the wrestlers would be at the HOT coliseum. We got the Channel 11 wrestling in Waco but when we'd go to Houston to see my dads brother and SIL we got to see different wrestlers on their color TV. It's been probably close to 20 years ago now but Ivan Putski was a security guard at the high school in Buda.

I think my favorite "modern" wrestler was Bill Goldberg. He came on the scene and won like 45 straight matches and was a huge sensation.

Mid/late '90s a couple from mom and dads church were working at HOT coliseum. taking tickets. They got me a job there and I was assigned to one of the back doors just to make sure nobody tried to sneak in. From my vantage point I could see the wrestlers behind the curtain and the ring. They'd be back there cutting up with each other and then head to the ring promising to kill each other. Ric Flair was the greatest ever. Just a pure star. Amazing persona.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wahoo_McDaniel#Football_career

McDaniel's college career was somewhat marred by injuries early on but by his senior year, he was one of the top players on the Oklahoma team despite being caught drinking after games and skipping classes. He played linebacker for the American Football League's Houston Oilers and Denver Broncos but really became a star when he was traded to the New York Jets in 1964. He was a crowd favorite and made 23 tackles in a single game against his former Denver Broncos. As a gimmick, whenever McDaniel made a tackle, the PA announcer would announce, "Tackle made by...guess who?", which the crowd would respond, "WAHOO!" He was picked by the Miami Dolphins in the 1966 American Football League expansion draft, as the team's major name player. During the 1968 season, he knocked out two police officers in an altercation and was traded to the San Diego Chargers. Wahoo never played a game for San Diego and started wrestling full-time. McDaniel was unique in that he wore his nickname of "Wahoo" as the name on his jersey.

Little known fact that Broncko Lubich later in his years and past his wrasslin' prime would attend various events as "Bucking Broncko Lubich". For a small fee you could put your child on his back and he'd try to toss them off ala a bucking bronco.

Gotta add one name, Killer Kowalski. Early 70's I remember watching him, Fritz Von Erich, and Toro Tanaka going at it.

I always wondered how they painted those abs on...

Just thinking how Kerry V was one of the first 'muscular' wrestlers. Most of them were big and had no vascular definition back in the day

He was naturally muscular but he worked his butt off down at Doug's Gym too.

Also was on a proper drug plan. I always wondered if they had doctors working with them of if they just went about it all willy nilly?

Good question. Kerry partied with the best of them but the dude was also a beast in the gym. Dianabol was the steroid of choice back then. My college trainers had them laying open in a bowl for anyone that wanted them. We didnt really know a lot about them back then.

Were not made illegal until 1990. Scientists still question if that was appropriate given what we know about it now.

We had one freak of nature, Harry Ullum. Harry was only about 5'9, but about 280. Not a bit of fat. Started on the OL for three National Championship teams. Only guy on the team that could bench more than me. Steroid freak. Absolutely impossible to knock him off his feet. Died at 34 due to drugs. Never heard the whole story

Not going to bat for the steroid users, I just noticed that it's always the coke or heroin or whatever that gets them. Add in the physical demands of powerbombs and piledrivers, I can certainly see why many end up self medicating.

I think its a lot to do with the OCD mentality in the gym. The same OCD mentality as pretty much anything else. too much is simply too much.

Chris Benoit might be the perfect example. In a 'roid rage', he murdered his wife and 7 year old son before killing himself

Benoit was found to have Xanax, hydrocodone, and an elevated level of testosterone, caused by a synthetic form of the hormone, in his system. The chief medical examiner attributed the testosterone level to Benoit possibly being treated for a deficiency caused by previous steroid abuse or testicular insufficiency. There was no indication that anything in Benoit's body contributed to his violent behavior that led to the murdersuicide, concluding that there was no "roid-rage" involved.

Thats been argued. Extensively. And debunked by other doctors. the word is the WWE got a couple bucks in the back pocket of the CME
