Mike Farris

Paul Heckmann (aka Assassin) and I are collaborating on a book project that combines Paul's inspirational personal story with his search, later in life, for his birth family. That search revealed a hero half-brother named John Kearns that he never knew, who had been killed in Laos in 1972 as part of the CIA's paramilitary operations in that country during the Vietnam Warthe so-called "secret war." John's heroism is memorialized as a recipient of the CIA's Intelligence Star, depicted on the CIA's Memorial Wall at its headquarters.

TCU Press will be publishing the book, titled "Searching for Lone Star: A Tale of Two Brothers." This will be my 20th bookmight be a good round number to stop on.

Here is how we pitched "Searching for Lone Star" to TCU Press:

In 2000, CIA director George J. Tenet revealed the identities of some of those represented by nameless stars on the CIA's Memorial Wall. Among those was a Texan named John W. Kearns, who initially attended Texas Christian University (where his father was the ROTC instructor) and graduated from North Texas State University with a degree in Far East Studies. John served as a special operations officer in the CIA's paramilitary operation in Laos during the Vietnam War, the so-called "secret war," where he was killed in action in 1972. John, whose call sign was, fittingly, "Lone Star," was posthumously awarded the CIA Intelligence Star "in recognition of his courageous performance under hazardous conditions."

For years, John's story stayed pretty well unknown, shrouded in secrecy by classified government documents, and only mentioned in passing in books such as "The Book of Honor: The Secret Lives and Deaths of CIA Operatives" by Ted Gup and "Top Secret Missions Performed by Elite Commo & Intel Specialists" by John E. Malone.

Until now.

In "Searching for Lone Star: A Tale of Two Brothers," Paul Heckmann, with the assistance of Mike Farris, tells his own personal story of struggles with addiction that, later in life, led him to search for his biological familyand to discover a hero half-brother he had never known: John W. Kearns. While digging deeper into John's story of heroism, he struggled with new, and seemingly insurmountable, difficulties of his own: Tardive Dyskinesia and a broken back.

"Searching for Lone Star" tells the story of two brothers, neither of whom knew about the other until long after the heroic death of the older that inspired the younger to overcome his own adversity. It is a story of sacrifice and inspiration, of love and loss, and, ultimately, of family

Wow. Salute! He was running units in the proxy army we built to interdict NVA infiltration routes around the DMZ into South Vietnam.

Lots of those Ground Branch guys were still around when I EOD'd in 1984, and most of the trainers in our ParaMiltary course were guys just like John. The stories.....

DCOS in my 2nd tour was not former military but rather was recruited directly into GB out of college with a forestry major to help with photo interpretation on Bomb Damage Assessment. He recounted what was for him the highlight of his war. There were so many bombing missions that debris was everywhere, including a lot of the containment panel remnants from cluster bombs. DCOS was surveying a particularly active area one day and noticed that on a particular hillside ALL of the panel remnants were laying perpendicular to the slope. He had a hunch that the VC were collecting them to use to cover the air vents in a cave complex....to keep the rain & debris out of the vent openings. His COB agreed and they dropped a CBU55 Fuel Air Explosive (think a small ancestor of the MOAB) on the hill, on the theory that the FAE would suck all the oxygen in the caves up & out of the vents. It worked - officers down deep in the complex slumped over dead at their desks over classified documents. Took out the entire command structure of that sector.

So much history of all that will remain untold. Glad you got to learn about your brother, of whom you should be exceedingly proud.

Got all the CIA files possible. John Cornyn helped me with that so I will always owe him.

Apparently, a lot of his work was with the 4802 Joint Task Force for Air America. From what we have figured out, he handled the ground support with Royal Laotian troops, Thai irregulars and Montagnards. He was unit commander.

One of those stars in 1992 was the guy I replaced in Khartoum. He went on to his first COS assignment in what at the time was a "wild-west" kinda place. Was in a car with a senior liaison contact and came upon an "impromptu" roadblock, soldiers with automatic weapons stopping cars just to shake them down for money. The liaison guy, thinking "bigshot like me ain't gotta put up with this BS" just drove thru. One of the (drunk) soldiers fired at the car. Our officer was in the passenger seat and leaned forward and down to turn his head around to look at the soldier as the car drove by. Got a round right above the right eye. Freak deal like Trump's miss in Butler PA. Turned the head just the right way at the instant needed.... If he'd have ducked any other direction or simply sat upright, shot woulda missed. There are/have been so many encounters at so many checkpoints in dusty places all over the world....one would think such should happen a lot more than it does. There is a google page on it but I'm not sure the agency ID is official.
